After attempting to write a 16x DVD+R for the first time (Philips), my HP 640b DVD +- Lightscribe DVD writer refuses to burn anything at high speeds. Any suggestions?
Also is there a way to limit the burn speeds that my DVD writer can write at?
The speed is limited by the drive's internal design and the top speed allowed by a combination of drive firmware and recording software. If HP issues a firmware update, it may include the Philips discs in the firmware table. If a firmware update is not available or if a new one does not include the Philips MID code, you will be stuck recording the Philips at a lower speed, which is probably safer any way.
Avoid burning your media above half it's rated speed. Certain problems occur at higher burning speeds, for example, incomplete copying, viewing irregularities such as skipping/flickering, the list goes on. Generally speaking, keep the burn speed low and the media quality high. Burn speeds can be adjusted within your burning software. For instance, with Nero, these can be set manually or left to the default settings. Getting to know your software and it's settings, may be a little confusing at the start, but after a few successful attempts you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. Post any problems you may have, be as specific as you can, and help will be at hand. Have fun and good luck.
