Hi folks,

I just installed a new Lite-On LH-20A1H and Nero 7.7.5.1. When burning a disc it is causing very big problems. The first disc got to 74% before the burn failed which then caused the system to freeze.

I thought it might be a Nero problem so I uninstalled, ran the clean tool along with a registry cleaner, and installed Nero 7.5.5.1. The next burn got to about 33% and then failed as well, and a few seconds after that the computer rebooted itself.

Anyone have any ideas? Did I get a defective burner?

Correction - The second version of Nero that I installed is 7.5.7.0 (not 7.5.5.1).

Hi manhole1
The pc rebooting could be caused by a few things. Heat can be one - inside of the case cleaned out recently?

Do a disc defrag very recently? If not do one of those.
Throw in cirus & spyware scans too.

When it rebooted - did you get the windows message something like system has recovered from a serious error? If you click on the more info link if you get it may have some info that can help.

Post the last Nero log too - just be sure to edit out the serial # - begin w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.

You can find them here: program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory

Hi binkie,

Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I recently upgraded a few items in my case including the burner, so it is definately clean inside. I also have lots of fans and monitor temperature levels, which are all ideal. Disc was defragged recently and I run SpySweeper & Antivirus software.

The one out of three time when the system actually rebooted itself it did come up with a serious error message, but I dismissed it. I had a third failure just a little while ago which just ejected and didn't cause the system to hang.

The three failed attempts I have had were using Philips DVD-R brand discs which always worked great with my Pioneer burner. I just burned a TDK DVD+R disc which did successfully complete. Could it be that the Lite-On just doesn't like the Philips discs (3 out of 3 failed)?

Below is my Nero log file of the three failed attempts. Thank you again for taking the time to look at this.

Sounds like your running a clean pc there manhole1 - major plus.

Might want to run a registry cleaner too - could be a conflict and this may fix it but I having a feeling you're already a step ahead of me on that.
If you get the error warning again write down the error and we can go from there.

Yes it does look like the LiteOn doesn't like the Philips - they're made by CMC and are not very good. So might just be a media problem on the burn failures. Though this wouldn't cause the system to reboot.

TDK uses different manufacturers too. And sometimes CMC too. Pop one of the blanks in the drive. Go to Nero Tools>CD-DVD Speed>disc info tab. The manufacturer will be listed there.

Good media to use would be Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell. You can get genuine Taiyo Yuden from a reputable online store.

All your drives are listed as having DMA off. But you have Nvidia so Nero doesn't report DMA mode correctly on these. From the log looks ok time wise but might just want to check in device manager to be sure.

File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
Nero and Roxio don't always play well together so another option is to uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool.

Oh and you're welcome!

I did actually run a registry cleaner, I forgot to mention that. I checked the manufacturer of both TDK and Philips discs and they are both made by CMC.

As far as 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS', I've never ran Roxio on this system. Can this be from the built-in recording that Windows XP uses? Nevertheless I will be running the zap tool.

If anyone reading this has the same DVD recorder as me (LH-20A1H), I'd like to mail you a couple of the Philips blanks to see if they cause any problems on your setup.

Thanks again binkie!

Not a problem manhole1

There are a few members here that have the model LiteOn - I just can't remember who.
Might want to post in this thread and see if you get a response on this model: link.

The Roxio driver comes with another program or 2 also. I think one is a version of WinAmp but not 100% sure. Pretty sure nothing to do with XP.

CMC does vary in quality so your best bet is to stick with the ones above. Much better & less of a headache :)

After I ran the zap tool and rebooted I got an error that popped up saying something about a Pinnacle driver error. Does Pinnacle product line maybe use Roxio drivers?

Nevertheless, I am attempting to burn to these Philips DVD-R discs once again to see if the error persists. If so I will be finding someone with the same drive to test these discs out.

I'll post my results as soon as Recode is finished with the disc.

Pinnacle could be one that does.

If removing that driver didn't work then to get the driver back for Pinnacle - uninstall Pinnacle then reinstall - should be good again.

Seems to be working fine with the Philips DVD-R discs after running the Roxio zap tool. I'll post again after a few more burns.
