I've tried this guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/260038
I've tried disabling Intel's Speedstep Technology because I've heard it can interfere with Windows' hardware detection. I've tried replacing the burner. I've tried replacing the cables (power and IDE). The burner is set to master, there is no other drive connected to the IDE cable. All hard drives (3) are working fine. I've had trouble with this since I bought my computer, but I figured that the first dvd burner in it was just bad. I got my new one from the manufacturer today, and it's a different brand and model, but has the same problem. It keeps reverting to PIO only mode.
Here's my Nero Infotool log:

Any help on this would be great. As a last resort, I may end up installing this burner on my PCI IDE controller card. It's got two IDE ports and I could combine two of my hard drives into one IDE cable with one master and the other slave. I'd really like to use the mobo and fix this problem, though. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What is up with all those ide controllers?
You should have one controller
One primary channel
One secondary channel
Good for 4 drives
Unless you added another ide card, then life gets interesting with burners.
You got a mess there.
If your only working with the motherboard and no added ide cards I would uninstall all of them and reboot. let XP rediscover them.
Everything needs 80 conductor cables and master and slave jumpers set correctly on all 4 drives.

I do have an IDE controller card installed. I thought I mentioned that in my first post. I use it because my mobo only has one IDE connector and 7 SATA connectors. One of my hard drives is sata, and two are EIDE. The burner is IDE. I really don't know why I have three each of primary and secondary IDE controllers showing for my mobo. I've done the uninstall thing for each one as outlined in alkohol's guide. I've uninstalled the burner as well. Whenever windows automatically reinstalls them on reboot, it reverts to PIO on my burner. One interesting thing that I don't understand is that Nero reports my burner as connecting to my Primary IDE channel, but windows reports it as connecting to the secondary. I'm to the point of giving up now.

Added ide cards can be a real trip with burners. Some burners only like certain cards. 7 SATA thats crazy LOL
Go over to CDFREAKS forum and ask around. They will get you right.

yeah, I'm really regretting choosing this ECS mobo. it has some decent features, but didn't realize about the single IDE until I actually had the mobo. I think I'll just quadruple check all of my HDDs to make sure the jumpers/cables are correct (I've done this numerous times already, but it doesn't hurt). And if it still doesn't work, I'll be using the burner on the IDE controller card I have. It's a pretty nice card. Thanks again, I really like these forums now that I've looked around.

Try this
Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor
My thanks go to my fellow MVP Alexander Grigoriev who taught me this method.
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.
Note that many CD and DVD drives only use UDMA-2, because their data rate is much lower than that of a hard disk. This is normal and no reason to worry.
2006-01-19 ? Horst Schülke wrote that it is sufficient to empty the content of these values. But you can also delete the values entirely. Windows will automatically recreate them anyway, with new content.
Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA).
2005-10-24 ? Tomá? Souček wrote, if this doesn't work, check also the dword value MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed, whose default value is hex 0xFFFFFFFF. If you have a much smaller value, you can try to set it back to its default and reboot for a test.
2006-07-21 ? Peter Götz wrote:
It's three keys that work together:
MasterDeviceTimingMode
UserMasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed
MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed
MasterDeviceTimingMode:
Queried by the drive. Each bit means a permitted transfer mode that the device is capable of. Somewhere at MS some of these bits can be looked up.
UserMasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed:
Has the same structure as MasterDeviceTimingMode and has the bit values the user configures in Device Manager. 0xffffffff allows all modes that are set in MasterDeviceTimingMode as well.
MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed:
This entry is the problem child. Normally not present in XP, it is created as a reaction to errors. This entry has absolute priority.
These parameters also exist for the slave drive as SlaveDeviceTimingMode, etc.

Well I guess your burner is in PIO but if that thing the Primary IDE is your HDD then it has problems new HDD are all run in UDMA 5 not 2 as my D815EFV Intel with a P3 has UDMA 5 and its from 2001.try this:
Go into your bios go into IDE settings then go into secondary and then where it says like Auto or Whatever select CDrom then go down and where it says PIO go Auto and where iot says DMA go Ultra DMA 2
Everything needs 80 conductor cables
You are wrong there hardrives require them if you want to make them faster and more efficient and if you want to use DMA mode 5 the fastets but on a DVD burner 40wire is great and 80 will do no differenece because a CD rom any every single one out only supports Ultra DMA 2 which is supported by a 40wire cable unless you have a Blu-ray drive.

wow, tried the registry edit, and it still reverts to PIO upon reboot. I'm truly at a loss. every forum thread across the internet I've read about this, the person asking the question gets it working by this step. Usually way before, even. meh, I guess I'll just put it on my IDE controller card and rearrange my HDDs.

I really feel your pain.
I am going through a similar issue where explorer will not read the contents of one of my drives.
Different topic.
Anyway.
Couple of things to check.
Have you checked to see if there is a BIOS update for your MB?
Dumb question, but I have to ask, have you tried different media?
Windows will revert to PIO if it sees, I believe 6 read errors.
Maybe the media is bad and throwing Windows for a loop.
Is the option available for DMA? I see PIO only in the drop down.
If not, I would think this to be a function of the BIOS not seeing it correctly.
Is your Windows installation legit?
If so, you can try to get a discussion going with a tech at MS?
I have been fighting with one of my drives for a month and I have directly related it to a "critical update" from MS. I've been working with a tech and they actually have a number of hotfixes for stuff like this. You will get a link and they will issue you a password if they think they have a fix for you.
Run the following:
Go to start: Run: "Msinfo32.exe" without quotes.
It's Windows system information tool.
I ran it to see if I had any reported conflicts. I did not. But it does have some good info. I don't understand 90% of it, but I'm sure it's good stuff.

I wish I had more. Sounds like you've done everything except a fresh install of Windows.
Keep us posted.

I've been looking for the past week for a BIOS update. Unfortunately, ECS's website is perpetually down. I know they're a crappy mobo company, but it was cheap, and I didn't have much money when I bought it. The DVD burner is brand new. I requested a new one from the manufacturer, because I thought my problems were burner related, but now I realize it's a DMA/PIO conflict. The DMA option is available, but does nothing. Computer manufacturer installed Windows. I've already decided that tomorrow I will open up my case again and install the burner on my add-in IDE Controller Card. Might as well.

Let us know.
have you tried uninstalling all of the drives including hard drives, CD/DVD drives and the primary and secondary controllers?
Having all of them controllers listed in DM is a little unsettling.
You can wipe them all out (uninstall) in device manager.
Windows will do it's thing on reboot.
dazila,
I don't quite agree with you about the transfer mode with CD/DVD drives. I just bought an HP 940i DL drive. It requires an 80 pin cable and gives me a DMA transfer mode of 4.

I never tried uninstalling the hard drives except for my SATA that has my Windows install on it. I'll try the ones running on my expansion card, too, though. It couldn't hurt. I did uninstall all of the primary and secondary channels listed in the DM, though.

I dont see the point of that Either unless you are burning at 28x then you wont need it I think we will never burn that fast anyway DVD will be wiped out by the time the tech come around.
40wire has enough bandwidth for up to 18+x
Ill never burn anything over 4x
Did you try what I said it sometime can be the bios if teh bios settings are wrong then windows will be 2 as windows takes all the hardware stated in the Bios and uses them the Bioses set way so if in the bios its set to PIO there is no point of Trying to set it to UDMA in Windows.

Your right on the write speeds.
I do notice a considerable difference in read speeds though.
It's kinda nice with dual layer discs.
If the option for DMA is available in DM, doesn't that mean that the BIOS is set up for DMA?

the bios for my mobo is really limited as far as what I can do. There's one parameter related to IDE drives. It says SATA2. When I press enter, I can choose RAID, IDE, or Disabled.

Wow P965TA, that worked like a charm. I'm sure I could've found the driver on ECS's website if the site actually worked. Now everything's working fast.

well, I never thought to use that cd, because the company that built my computer SHOULD have installed all necessary drivers. It's funny that they didn't, but I'm really glad you thought of it. I feel a little stupid now that I didn't just go through the cd first. Thanks again. I burned an audio CD in about 2 minutes awhile ago!

Then i suggest you install the latest official intel drivers :
http://www.station-drivers.com/telecharg....1.1010-all.exe
if you're not sure they installed any drivers...

And if you want to now How to overclock this Mobo, i found how to do it with some software. As you all know there is now such functionality in the bios. i googled and didn't found anyone who find any solution, and all the tests done on this mobo just tell that you can't do it.
But HAHAHA !! the ICS 9LPRS509 is supported by ClockGen

http://www.cpuid.com/download/ClockGen.zip
Look the screenshot below:

I can easily go from 266Mhz to 300Mhz just by moving the slide bar on ClockGen and without doing any change in the bios.
My bios is all set by default (266/100/33) and i have 2x512Mo of kingmax memory DDR2 PC4200

That's really cool. I was really looking forward to overclocking, but failed to even look up any info on the mobo before buying it. The bios update a few months ago allowed you to mess around with the memory timings a little bit, but it was still buggy, so I just left it alone. I found a great program to overclock my videocard called Powerstrip. I'll give this one a try. I actually have the E6300 and 2x512 DDR2 800, so I'm sure it'll work for me, too.
