Nero isn't recognizing my DVD Drive, it's only recognizing it as a CD drive, I have Nero Express, and I have all the files on my computer ready to burn, I just can't because it won't recognize my DVD Drive. Oh, also I have Vista, is that a problem?

Hi.

If you have a version of Nero 6, I'm not sure it works with Vista. I don't have Vista and probably won't because of DRM issues so I may not be of much help.

Otherwise....

What exact version (x.x.x.x) of Nero do you have installed?

Did this problem begin after installing Vista?

Is this a new machine that came with Vista or an older one you installed Vista on?

Can you burn a CD?

What brand and model of burner do you have?

Have you updated the burner's firmware?

Try using the freeware ImgBurn to burn your DVD: http://www.imgburn.com
Use the Build mode if you have a folder of video files to burn to make an ISO image file and then burn that with the Write mode of ImgBurn.

If you have data and not DVD video to burn, try burning with DeepBurner: http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download

Run the Nero Driver Clean Tool: http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/Driver_Cle...tryChecker.html

Set your restore point back to a time when the burner worked:
Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Download the trial version of Nero 7 and see if it works for you.

I have version 5.5.10.7
And yes it's a new computer with Vista on it.

Will IMGBurn be able to copy a whole DVD, cause I have the whole thing saved on here (menu's, special features, and everything).

Also when I start Nero, it says I need to install "Burn Rights", whatever that means.

My laptop is a Gateway, so if that helps any.

ImgBurn should be able to burn the disk for you. If you need to compress or reauthor, DVD Shrink should work. If the DVD files to be burned are in a folder, you'll have to use the Build mode of ImgBurn to make an ISO to burn

Nero 5, being so old, likely has compatability issues with Vista.

To the best of my knowledge the freeware approaches to DVD backup still work with Vista.

Ripit4me is a macro program that combines other free programs to make perfect backups of your DVDs.

So would you suggest using ImgBurn or RipIt4Me? And will those be able to copy a whole DVD, menus and everything?

From start to finish, Ripit4me can do the entire backup.

You said you already had the files on your hard disk. Are they ready for burning or do you need to reauthor or compress? If you have to reauthor or compress, use DVD Shrink to do that, output an ISO, and then burn the ISO with ImgBurn. Otherwise, just start over with the original disk and use Ripit4me. It has a 1-click mode so all you have to do is choose whether to backup the entire DVD or just the main title.

What do you mean by Output an ISO?

And where can I get RipIt4Me?

In DVD Shrink, after clicking the Backup! button, one of the "DVD target output" options is Create ISO File.

If you have a folder of DVD video files and want to use ImgBurn to burn it, select the Build mode of Imgburn, select the folder of DVD video files, and create an ISO image file. Then use the Write mode of ImgBurn to burn the ISO to the disk. An ISO image files is just an exact bit by bit image of the disk as it will appear after being burned.

So if I use DVD Shrink to output an ISO, do I still need to use Build mode on ImgBurn?

No, just use the Write mode if you already have an ISO.
