Recently ordered some Taiyo Yuden discs from the Meritline. I usually
receive discs that are silver on top. The ones I got in this last
bunch look like a paper type layer on top. When I ordered there was
nothing to indicate they were different.
When I mark my discs I usually use a fine tip permanent sharpie. Will
that ink soak through and hurt the media? Also the paper looks much
softer than the acrylic surface. Will these type discs damage more
easily? Do these discs deteriorate over time faster than the others?
Do DVD players read these as well as the others or do some players
not like them?

What are their media codes? Is the hub marking consistant for the media code and burn speed and are they DVD-R or DVD+R?
I use Sharpies on mine (all brands) and so far no problems.

They are TYG02. There is no marking on the hub at all. I checked
the media code and burn speed with Imgburn which tells you both
when you put a blank disc in. I have used two of them to back up
movies. The burn software said the burn was successful-haven't
had time to watch them yet. They are DVD-R.

If legit, they should be 8x DVD-R w/ hub markings GG00xxxx (where xxxx is the numerical batch number. Search for the hub markings again. In bright light they are more obvious. They appear near where the clear part of the hub ends and the ink part begins (it's on the ink part tho not the clear).

You were right. There was a number there. It took a really bright
light and a jewelers loop for me to read it. They read GG007009.
I was not questioning the fact that they were TY. Just unfamiliar
with the surface on the top side and was curious about the questions
I asked.

Are these not white printable TY discs? They are made for a printer, so the Sharpies probably won't hurt the disc.
I stopped buying the generic TY's cause I don't like either the silver lacquer or white printable surfaces.
Sony 8x +R made in Japan discs were TY's with a great surface for Sharpie pens - I guess they are all made in Taiwan now since they moved to 16x.
Verbatim 16x have a great surface and have been as reliable as the TYs.

These are the printable discs.
Finally played one all the way through last night. It played
flawlessly.
What I'm wondering about is if over time that paper surface will
scratch or fuzz or something and make the discs difficult for a
DVD player to work. Has anybody had these long enough to tell?

Those are all I use these days (TY inkjet printables). I have burned thousands of these over the last two years, and they are as reliable as the silver lacquer discs. Now all you need is an Epson R200 series printer! LOL

Sounds like you got a great bargain there,inkjet printable tys for the cost of regular. No need to worry about their performance.
The white printable surface is durable. I couldn't imagine using a sharpie on mine, LOL.
If you got a local staple's,they have a lot of clearances on the Epson Stylus photo R series that will easily print covers on those blanks. I've seen them as low as $50
