DVD cant burn up to 4.7GB

i wonder why, i cant burn up to 4.7GB on a single disc?
i only can insert about 4.4 - 4.5GB..
not more than that.. even sometimes 4.5GB also cant. Nero prompt me that not enough disc space..
i'm using TDK 16x DVD+R, a 18x Samsung DVD-Writer.

The reason you cant get 4.7 gb is simple, there is a need to leave both a leading and ending track, therefore the maximum space is around 4.350 gb. if you set this in Nero or other programs like shrink you will always have the space for your movies to be shrinked to.

thank you for your explanation..
now i know reason why i keep on getting only 4.4GB..
the leading and ending track took a lot of space.. WTH..

Actually it is more of a math thing....
DVD manufacturers assume: 1 GB = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 bytes, but computer software normally assumes: 1 GB = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes.
So 4.7 (DVD manufacturers) GB = 4.38 (computer software) GB.

fasfrank is right. If you wonder where it comes from, it's SI to Binary conversion. Manufactureres like the looks of the larger SI numbers and the PC reads the smaller binary numbers.

just now i did burned 4.498gb..
ok so i can assume 4.4 is a normal capacity for DVD's..

4.498GB would be what is called an overburn. If you've ever used Nero Express the media selection is DVD5 (4483MB) and DVD9 (8152MB). You may notice the labeling is a bit different but the numbers in the lower left of the chart above show the Binary numbers for the capacity of a 4.7 disc to a few decimal places (4482.269287MB and 4.377216100GB). Round those off and you have 4482MB and 4.38GB. Often you'll see 4483MB and 4.37GB. It just depends on how the fraction was rounded. For safety sake, I think those numbers should be rounded down, but the amount is relatively small. Some poor quality media requires setting defaults lower than that to keep from recording too close to the edge. Good media may let you add a few extra MB. However you're pushing your luck when you exceed the capacity. That's why there is the stated capacity for the media. If you're going to be editing and going by the numbers generated by the PC, then you'd best learn the binary capacities and go by the guidelines. You'll find most transcoding and encoding programs, i.e. Shrink and Rebuilder, have the default at or below the stated binary capacity and some people set them even lower. Not many people try for that little bit extra that could possibly effect the playability of the DVD.

one more thing.
why everytime i use Nero, the red marking, mark at 8GB ++..
i'm using normal single layer disc, but the mark is like i'm using dual layered disc. is it because of my Nero?
i'm using TDK DVD+R and 18x samsung dvd-writer

Yes there are selections to be made. Nero auto detects the media, but it doesn't change the format in the recording programs. Unfortunately some things are left for the user. BTW, you're welcome.

Go to the Nero website and you can get all the info on the newer Nero 7 and download the trial if you want to try it. Save your serial for the Nero 6 in case you may want to put it back. The website still stores user guides for the Nero 6 programs.
