I am using a laptop with a JVC reciever, which has a built-in USB DAC. On quiet passages, I can hear some clicks and pops. The noise is noticable on .mp3, .flac & .wav files. The noise is still there if the source is the laptop's drive or external USB drive. It's there if things are connected to USB or not. I cannot seem to eliminate it.
However, there is no clicking and popping when using my laptop's AC'97 soundcard. Also, and this is the puzzeler, there is no such noise when the audio is encoded with video. My 8.5 mbits Nora Jones videos decode perfectly (no noise) from either the laptop HD or any external HD.
