I have been struggling for days trying to Burn any kind of file onto a DVD-R. I can burn CD's with no problem...
I am using Nero 7, but have also tried Roxio. I have deleted all DVD writing softwares and installed them both as individules, still nothing. It will either say Burn Failed, could not perform disc at once, or Illegal disc, depending on which software is used.
I borrowed an external DVDRW drive, and I get the same exact thing.
I have two drives on my Dell, one is just a CD reader (the Master) then I have the NEC DVDRW ND2500A as my built in writer (slave). Both came pre-installed from Dell.
I am trying to burn onto TDK DVD-R 1-16x 4.7GB/GO discs
I am running windows XP SP2,
I have tried everything to get this to write and am having no luck.
Anybody have any advice?

If u post a Nero log that would help out a lot to see whats the problem
u can find it here C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core, look for the NeroHistory.TXT file

Post the last Log and DONT forget to edit Ur Serial # out.

Below is one of the Nero Log files.

However, I would like to add that I contacted NEC about the problem and got this response:

Email from NEC
One problem you may now have is that you installed too many burning
programs that each installed their own drivers into Windows. You will
need to uninstall all of them and try the following suggestion from
Microsoft to clear your registry and then reinstall one of the programs:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Also, Windows XP does not have the ability to burn to DVDs, only to CDs.
Since Windows itself lacks any support for burning to DVDs, it treats a
blank DVD as being full and cannot do anything with it.
Finally, a firmware update may also help. If the drive came with your
Dell, you can find the update at Dell's website. If you purchased the
ND-2500 separately, are there now 2 drives in your system? The firmware
instructions state that the ND-2500 has to be the master and that the
other drive needs to be disabled. By disabling the ND-2500, you have
essentially uninstalled the drive and the firmware updater will not be
able to find it.
Thank you,
NECSAM Service and Support

**WARNING** When I went onto Microsoft and downloaded the "Guided Help" software suggested by NEC, and ran it, It said CD-Rom is missing and messages sites error codes 31, 32, 19, 39 or 41. Then it crashed my system, including all players, dvd programs, the internet connection, etc, etc. I had to restore the system back a day...

It's no big deal, so humor NEC. Hook the drive up at master and temporarily unhook the CD from the system. I'm assuming you know about drives, cables, and jumpers. Also Dell had a habit of hooking up drives using cable select. If the CS jumpers are used, you just hook the drive you want to be master at the end connector of the cable. Otherwise you use the Master/Slave convention.

Is this your first attempt at burning DVDs or did this system work before and just quit?

Before someone else tells you, get some different media, something like Sony or Verbatim +R for your next attempt. Many people suggest cow pies are better media than CMC. I haven't made up my mind yet. LOL

Yes, It's my first time trying to burn DVD media. My AutoCAD files and pictures have reached such a size, I'm having to burn four CDRW's for my backups. Plus I've been asked to copy some movies.
I will try both suggestions, then post my results.

However, I think I will buy disc's first. Due to, I have borrowed a external HP DVD 940 drive, tried it and got the same exact results as the NEC. Both can write CD's, but not DVD's.

I'm also wondering if I should Uninstall Windows media player, since it appears to be able to burn discs?
I am just trying to find anything that's going to conflict with this issue.

Sometimes burners die and they will only burn cds for about 40 bucks pull the drive and replace it or use it for a slave, I would be willing to bet its time for a new burner and switch to Verbatim Disc. can burn data or pictures on a dvd if you have Nero and Roxio on at the same PC that will cause conflect between the 2

Like I said earlier, I tried an external drive that I know works on another PC, and it still errors out when I try and burn connected to this PC.
I will take the advice earlier on trying a different disc manufacturer, if that doesn't work I'll then try the Slave/Master switch...I wish I had a slave doing this...LOL I've been at this for days...

Once you get some good media, set your burn in Nero to simulate. If everything checks out uncheck it and do the real burn. If you still get an error, post the log for us. When through remember to uncheck Simulate or you'll have another problem for not burning. Using simulate in Nero can save wasting media.

Uninstall Nero run the clean tool save your serial number before you start if you ran roxio and Nero and uninstalled one you could have screwed something up there by removing one if you cant burn from an external that points at the program

It would probably be easier to make sure the firmware is up to date and try a burn with a better brand of media than going through cleaning the system and reinstalling the software. But if it comes to that, cleaning with the Nero clean tool would be a good idea. Also Roxio had a cleaner named RoxiZap for cleaning out their software.

Well, I uninstalled Nero, ran the Nero General-CleanTool and Registry Checker, then Re-installed Nero.
Tried burning a disc and of course the same problem exists.

I was unable to find a Roxio cleaner. However, when I uninstalled it, I did run regedit and took out all the files I could find in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

I still have to buy some new discs next week and see if that makes a difference...
I'm starting to loose interest, it's too frustrating after a week of this.

At first yes I did have both, but then I deleted Roxio & Nero, reinstalled Nero and have tried the external a few more times.
Today is the second time I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling Nero. Only this time I used the clean tool.
It's really odd that both internal & external drives can write to a CDR but not the DVD. I'm really thinking it's the disc's. Although, I've heard both good and bad about the TDK discs I'm using. Or, some windows setting that's whaco...
I use Memorex for CD writing.

Heres the link for the Roxio clean tool.

Quote:

The thing about TDK media is u don't know what they will code out too, its a crapshoot. I have used TDK's in the past that have a TTH MID code which IMO aren't that bad, now u have ones that are CMC MID code which like PacMan777 said are not liked here, 99% of AD members would not reccomend them and u R finding out why.
Quote:
Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AM3
U are using CMC crap
Thats why i would bet a lot of money that ur problem is the disks.
Try Verbatims and it should solve ur problem.

Well, I thank you '300bowler' for the link for the Roxio clean tool. I used it, and now I can write DVD's to the external drive...Woo Hoo.
Roxio must bury files that screw with Nero.
My internal drive still doesn't burn, but as the Tech from NEC told me, "the NEC has to be set to master". My CDROM is currently master and the NEC is a slave. So, maybe tomorrow, I can pull the Dell out of it's house and change the NEC to the master, and the Hitachi to the slave. If it still doesn't work, I have another 8X dvdrw drive I can install.
I'll let you all know what happens!
