Ok, so i'm new here and i've been checking out the previous threads on CactusDataShield (CDS). Anyways I decided to check out the Macrovision so I thoughtfully pointed my browser at www.macrovision.com. Don't go to http://webserver.macrovision.com cos that will only give you the default apache configuration okay screen. So don't do that. Don't even try it. Not even just for a laugh.

Anyway the CDS FAQ has me confused cos under the question 'Is CDS compliant with the red book standard' they've answered:

CDS is designed to be compatible with Philips Red Book CD audio standard. This design ensures that CDS has superior compatibility and playability across the worldwide installed base of CD players and PC drives.

But under the question 'Should copy protected CDs contain the compact disc logo?', they said:

Macrovision recommends that the compact disc logo be not applied to copy-protected CDs, as there is debate in the industry as to whether copy-protected CDs are supported by the logo licensing entity.

So what gives Macrovision? Are your CD's red book or not? Anyone got any ideas?

says it all: It is designed to be playable on devices that can play Red Book audio CDs (= compatible with Red Book) - BUT A CD WITH CDS IS NO RED BOOK AUDIO CD (mainly because of TOC manipulation).

So if you sell a CDS CD with compact disc logo,
- Philips doesn't like it and could sue you
- customers can return CDs as defecitve in many countries.

CDS as well as many other copy protected cds technically arent redbook standardized cds. the protection schemes used to protect the cd mess with various parts of the disc that make the disc redbook standard.. In a nutshell - CDS can be defined as NOT redbook standard..

Sony and the other companies that devolped the CD format pretty much told the RIAA, BSA software publishers etc that cds that dont match the redbook standard are supposed to be forbid to sport the CDlogo.. as we can see that didnt happen LOL
