I dont see much talk about dual layer media. Is this because of the cost? I dont want to sacrifice quality on my back ups and am considering using dual layer discs since alot of my backups cannot be shrunk enough even by taking out the extras. What are peoples thoughts on the subject? Seems to me cost is the only reason people arent using them more

Cost is probably the main reason, and more people have issues playing these on stand alone players. I myself havent had a problem with the few I have burned. It is actually cheaper to just put the longer movies on two DVD 5 discs than on DVD 9 disc. With that in mind it is just a choice of if you don't mind having two disks for a few of the longer movies or you absolutly have to have it on one disk. DVD 9 discs (DVD9) can be tricky with the layer break and if you aren't using the correct program's when burning them you will surely create some coasters and they are a little more expensive coasters :-)

Myself I will stick to DVD 5 discs for now and mainly because of price and dependibility.

Hope this help's a little

It's more of a cost issue for me because a spindle of 25 dual layer discs I can buy 100 single layer DVD-R discs. The compression is not that noticable when you compress a movie to fit on a single disc.

There hasn't been any good sales on DL media lately. Usually they go on sale for under $2 a pc at bestbuy, office max, office depot.

I use inkjet printable media, lightscribe, and not a lot of that out there for inkjet printable DL media, and I'd hate to see the price for them..

The bonus features on original dvds don't even fancy me anymore, uless they are the naughty ones, LOL. I usually just backup main movie only. Then a simple insert backup into player and it'll autoplay-no menu to screw around with and also no need for looking for the lost remote, LOL

DL backups are totally different, like bbmayo posted.ImgBurn is what I use to burn-very effective!!!
A totally different format.

Quality media is also a necessity-Verbatim DL media is the best out there.Beware of the rest.

Never have the need for a DL disc to compress 1 pressed DVD9 down to fit on a DVD5. I use dvdremake to remove the previews, adverts, and warning screens and then encode with dvd-rb/cce, 3 passes on folders over 7gb's. The reduction level has been as much as 50% and the video quality is still amazing and hard to distinguish from the original even on my 52" HDTV.

I do use DL media when combining episodic dvd's and the folder is greater than 8gb's. Again I use dvdremake and dvd-rb/cce. I've compressed folders as large as 15gb down to fit on a DL disc. Video quality is better than watching on network tv (excluding HDTV channels of course). Verbatim DL dvd+r's burned at 2.4x with imgburn and booktyped dvd-rom. No playback problems yet.

I had to change the book type on DVD+R discs to dvd-rom as well to have them play on my xbox. I had used book type dvd-rom for dual layer discs, but found out it would play DVD+R if I changed its book type to that as well. Any idea why that is anyone? I use Imageburn and a LiteOn drive

stutz10k - Because of when you Change the booktype it Fools the drive/player into thinking it's a dvd-rom - Like a Commercially Pressed Movie , Game or Software ? It's really Not but the drive or player does'nt know that ! It's similar in concept to makinga CDR copy of an audio CD or CD-rom Game or software Disc ! Your not really making-or Burning a CD because like DVD's & DVD-rom 's A real audio CD or a CD-rom is Pressed/stamped similar to a Vinyl record! - But That's basically Semantics and Mincing words !Many people Refer to the Burning of CDR's OR DVD media a Making CD's or DVD's ! Heck My sister-in-law Still Thanks me for Making her tapes even though the Tapes as she calls them are CDR copies of Zydeco & Blues CD's !!! But She's happy with the results whatever she calls it! But that's the gist of the booktyping thing ! Other members can explain it more eloquently and in more detail ! But there is the quick & dirty version of it ! good Luck & happy Burning !
