I am having the same problems this guy did: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/46463, only his solution (ticking the "force dvd compatibility" box did not work for me. I am using fujifilm 4.7gb 4x dvd-r media in the a06, and can burn dvd-r/w discs fine. However, plus discs (which burn fine ostensibly) are then unreadable by the drive itself, let alone my standalone dvd player. I've used cloneDVD and Nero 6 ultra, Smartripper and DVD shrink, and dvd x copy Express, all to no avail -- 5 coasters later. My standalone requires + discs, so the option of simply buringin - discs is not viable. Anybody got any ideas? I'm going bat***t over this! :)

Hi Eminence
I have an a06 too and am very happy with it. When I first got my a06 I thought I had made a huge mistake as I was not able to get any burns and made a lot of coasters. I found the problem to be that I was using 4X speed media. Burning video files seems to do better at a lower speed. The majority of rw's that I see in the stores are a lower speed media, that might explain why your dvd rw's are burning ok. Try using a 2X or 2.4X dvd media. Since I have made the switch to a lower speed media, I have not made a single coaster. Hope this helps.

For your +R recording, stop down a speed

Hmm...ok, I burned a movie successfully on +r 4x media with DVD X Copy Gold. Couldnt do it with CloneDVD, Express, or Nero 6.0. Next experiment, Nero 6.0 again and stepping down the speed like Oriphus suggests. Why do I want to do that now that I can burn with DVDXCG? I want to be able to rip and burn onto 1 disc, which of course DVDXCG will not do.

I'm also going to buy some slower media and see if that works.

Thanks to both of you for your time and suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes.

When I first purchased my Pioneer A06, I also had tons of issues. But I was a newbie, and I bought lots of cheap Princo disks because the guy at the store told me they would work great to back up movies. What a joke!

I have since learned several things:

1) Don't ever use cheap disks, especially Princo. I now use Memorex, which are inexpensive, but high quality enough for DVD backup.

2) You will have more luck burning with DVD-R media than DVD+R media; it is more compatible.

3) Purchase 2X disks for DVD-R, and 2.4X if you MUST burn DVD+R. Slower speed = better burn.

4) Never use labels on your DVDs, they can create playback problems.

5) Throw away DVDXCopy Gold and XPress. Use DVDShrink and burn with Nero in DVD (UDF/ISO) mode. I have now backed up almost 50 movies and each of them have played perfectly on my Toshiba stand alone DVD player.

Best of luck to you!

Thats all good advice - the one thing though that i woudnt like is having to burn at 2x whenever the Pioneer DVR105 burns at 4x no problems!
