I had a desktop PC with a Sony Single layer DVD burner. (can't remember what the drive was exactly)

I used datawrite red Mach 4 8X discs,,,never had a problem.

I now have a new laptop, HP510 with a dual layer drive that calls it's self a TSS Corp TS-L632D,,,whoever they are?

Now I use all the same software, clone dvd, shrink, AnyDVD etc and I always get told that it burns ok by Nero, DVD Decrypter etc,,but my dvd player just says "this disc may not have playback function"

The only thing that has changed is the drive,,,apart from the computer obviously.

Is it possible that the drive can not use these discs when my old drive could? The new drive can burn to some other unbranded cheapo discs and they play fine! any ideas???

It just sounds like your player is having a tough time with those disks. Datawrite isn't necessarily high quality media in the first place. They rebrand lots of media from the very low quality manufacturers like CMC Magnetics and Prodisc. They also rebrand some decent quality stuff as well.

You can use DVD Decrypter, the Nero tools, DVD Identifier or any number of other programs to ID the actual manufacturer of the disk. If you have a disk in your burner and select the Write mode of DVD Decrypter, the manufacturer will appear beside DISK ID: in the righthand side column.

The best media is made by Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden. TY is available online and can also be obtained by purchasing Sony and Fuji disks labeled as made in Japan. Verbatim is available nearly everywhere. All the other manufacturers having varying degrees of quality, ranging from OK to extremely poor. Complicating matters is that many "brands" use the disks from a variety of manufacturers and you don't really know what you're getting until you unwrap it. Verbatim makes its own media as does TY so you know what you're getting.

Laptop burners aren't as robust as desktop burners and your burner may not be getting really good quality burns on that media making playback more difficult for your player. Do you know whether your disks are being booktyped as DVD-ROM when you're burning them? Only +R disks can be booktyped. Have you also checked to make sure your burner firmware is up to date?

Thanks for the reply, I think it's about time to try some TY, I've heard so much about them,,,buy cheap buy twice!!!

I've popped on of my red datawrite discs in and this is what DVD Decrypter says this:

Does that tell you anything about the quality (or lack of) of these discs?
I also ran a Nero speed test, these are supposed to be 8x and the test said max speed was less than 4x !!! It's amazing they can get away with selling them as 8x,,,surely that's trade descriptions!!!

I haven't touched the firmware,,didn't think i would need to as it's a brand new laptop and a 16x drive,,,these red discs are fairly old technology now. Suppose it wouldn't hurt though but I'm not sure how to go about updating it.

Also, they are -R discs,,so not booktyped I assume,,,what does that mean anyway,,,and is it a good or bad thing?

That media code isn't one I recognize so I'm guessing it's a really bad manufacturer. Verbatim will be easier to find at brisk and mortars and online. 20 pounds for a 100-pack isn't out of line depending on the speed of the media and who's offering the deal. 35 cents per 8X disk is a normal online price from Supermediastore. 20 pounds per 100 would seem about the same.

If your burner is fairly new it would already have the firmware coding necessary for those older disks so I wouldn't bother just for that. Laptop burners can be tricky to update (most aren't) so be sure you read how to do it for your burner. A lot just depends on how the burner is situated on the bus, master or slave.

I have decided not to even think about touching the firmware for now,,,it's a brand new laptop and I'm not that confident about stuff liek that,,,,yet!

I am going to buy some nice discs from here:

After reading a few other threads I am going to keep away from ebay for media,,sorry to all the genuine sellers out there on ebay,,,email me if you want to offer me some real TY and a free sample and I'll think about it!

Digitalfaq.com rates this media as 1st class,but this MID code pops up more than any when it comes to Burn logs and Stand alone player compatability. I see this code more than when people are using cmags.

BTW,that's a TDK code for some of their -8x that aren't made by cmags. Check out the dvd-/R media forum for dogbombs nice list of media codes and see how many brand names used TTH-02,which is probably a lot of them.

HP uses a lot of TSS/TSST burners. These are Toshiba/Samsung drives. Probably not many firmware updates for it. At least it's not a ligitimate HP crappy drive, LOL

When changing dvd burners,you may not think all DVD-RW drives are alike,but some stand alone players will tell you otherwise.There can be huge differences between burners,which I know because I have used 9 of them-and they do vary.

If other discs play fine except those TTH-02s,then that tells you your stand alone player doesn't like that particular MID coded media from that particular TSST burner.

Maybe you could find a newer firmware update for it so the burner can properly burn those TTH-02?

I agree, I think it is the combination of this disc with the new drive,,,,as the discs work (with other drives) and the drive works (with other discs). The dvd player i have is not normaly fussy and will play pretty much anything you throw at it.

I googled the media code earlier and TDK are among a few people who use it,,,it get's pretty good reviews overall and until now I never had a problem with them,,,or the datawrite titaniums i used before which were great. I wish i had some titaniums left to try in this drive just to see if they worked.

Like I said,,,I'm going to get some verbatim TY's and if they work I'll stick with them,,,I've tried loads of different discs by now and some have worked, others haven't. It's time to find one and stick with it!!!

I've ordered some verbatims with TY dye drom the web,,but until they arrive i thought I'd blow a tenner on a nother pack of dadawrite titanium to see what happens.

They appear to be exactly the same as the red mach 4 discs. They appear to burn ok but then will still not play on my dvd player.
This dvd player being part of a 'Sharp' home cinema system incase anybody is wondering.

So now I have 2 types of disc that worked with my desktop and played on the dvd player,,,but now wont when using the laptop.

However, I tried the reds and titaniums on a cheapo supermarket brand tv/dvd combi today and the bloody work perfect!!! but wont on my much more expensive sharp dvd player!!!

All the above is when using Nero (either alone or through DVD Shrink) I tried burning one of the same dvd images with DVD Decrypter and hey presto,,it plays on the sharp,,,but stutters a bit through the into credits. watching now (saw 3) to see if it makes it to the end ok. I'll try a few more discs using DVD Decrypter and see what luck i have.
