try a new audio driver. i had a similar problem before the one of the last times windows crapped out on me, and reinstalling the audio driver fixed it.

all systems that i know of run off ac97. i'm not sure of any alternative. i mean the actual drivers listed on the cd that comes with your sound card. just go through your computer and uninstall all driver/hardware related to your sound card, then reinstall it off the disc. that should do it.

if it's onboard, go the website of the manufacturer of your PC (if prebuilt) or motherboard (if custom built) and get the latest drivers. or if you have the latest drivers and you're sure your connections are all proper, try reverting to older drivers that might be more stable.

hmm...part of me wants to say it's something wrong with the speakers, then.

i was having a really bad time with my onboard not too long ago, so i went to newegg and picked up a 7.1 surround sound card, shipped, for under 30 dollars US.

a new card is a great solution.
