Why not use DVD+R DL?

It seems most people are using DVD+-R to record, but hardly any use the DL. Is there a reason for this? I find that if I use DVD+R DL, I can easily get an exact copy of any DVD9 movie.

I have been watching Best Buy closely and this week they have DVD+R DL 25pk for $29.99. That is a little more than $1 per DVD vs. $2.

For me, they still need to come down in price, i just bought a 100 pack of DVD+R at office max for 25.00. .25 per, hard to beat that.

Yep, that is hard to beat, but I guess I am willing to pay the extra to not have to suffer in transcoding quality.

most of the time if you remove the previews/extras and extra subtitles, you can get nearly 100% quality on a single layer disc, so that is why most dont bothe with dual layers unless its a long movie.

yeah, no issues with quality on the DVD+R sl disks, but i'm not really what you would call a videophile.
when i do start purchasing the DL disks, they'll be primarily for backing up from my hard drive.

i agree missing 100% correct. on my 47" TV there is no picture loss with about 70% compression. cant tell the difference at all. plus its only Verbatim media for me.

Yeah, but those a Memorex (Ritek). Best to stay with Verbatim. Officemax has 10-packs for $15, or $1.50 each. That's about as good as it gets at this point in time.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Colors seem darker and less rich on compressed video. There is a huge difference on animated material at low compression levels, with heavy artifacting. If you want to see what I mean, try backing up Simpsons Season 7 with DVD-Rebuilder and CCE - that's only about 20% compression with no extras and multi-angles - and it's still unwatchable due to heavy artifacting. I can't imagine how bad a job a one-click transcoder like CloneDVD or DVDShrink would do. A lot of it does depend on the specific material, but the quality loss is often more than you really think.
Agreed on Verbatim though - they're the best! :)

Not to hijack the thread, but...
I just purchased memorex DVD+R sl at the office max store, when i run Dvd-Identifier on them i get this

Those Memorex +16x are Verbatims!! They've used verbatim in the past,but a very small percentage.
I've tested media from 2 different spindles of Memorex +16x and yielded Ritek-R04 and RicohJpn-R03-00. One of those spindles,the discs have etched bubbles all over the top of them. The other batch,no bubbles on the top of the disc.
Memorex seems to be getting some quality manufacturers for their +16x media,for now. With my luck,I'd pick up a pack of them when on sale and get stuck with CmcMag-M01 which Maxell is using a slew of them on their taiwanese +16x media.

The etched bubbles are the new graphical looks on some of the Memorex 16x media. They're on the top side of the disc.
The 100 pks have been on sale for $25,but I just don't trust them enough to buy them when I can get Verbatim for around that price.

So, we, as a group have now way of finding out what the UDI is outside of buying a pack? That doesn't sound right, what about the barcode on the outside of the package, anyone checked these?

That is hard to beat, but the way I look at it--it's an extra $1.60 per movie and I can keep all the extra features, and get everything at 100% quality.
If I like a movie, it's worth $1.85 to me. If it's not worth $1.85, it's not worth .25 --I'm not going to watch a movie that's only worth twenty-five cents but no more.
It's also a lot faster to copy it. No fussing around with editing, VobBlanker this, Editfob that, MenuShrink this, burn to a DVD RW to make sure it works, and if it did, copy to a +/-R.
Is your time worth $1.60 / hour? If it is and you save an hour, you made your money back. If you save a few hours, is your time worth .50/ hour? If your time isn't worth .50/hr or $1.60/hour, maybe you ought to get a job at minimum wage. You'll be making 4-12x what your time is worth now.
So I went to DLs, but I got some coasters. So now it's Verbatim +R DLs or nothing. So what, it's $1.85 at NewEgg. ($37/20, no shipping, no tax.)
If a lot of people started buying the Verbatim DLs, they'd drop in cost. Buy 'em. Don't think about it. Just buy 'em.

That sale is over, and it's hard to know when Office Max is going to put those on sale. Or is there a way?
Besides, by the time you pay sales tax and shipping at Office Max, they're going to cost you $1.85 anyway, so you might as well just get them at NewEgg where they're available all the time, no hassle.
