Hi jsmanto
Probably your best bet would be to get a new dvd burner.
This one is a bit older - only supports +R w/ a max burn speed of 4x.
Looks like the last firmware up date was from 2004 so newer media like 16x can be hit or miss.
New burners are much cheaper now.
For media on this drive I would look for 8x max.

Look at LiteOn, Pioneer or NEC.
If you're in the US - check out newegg.com

Not a problem jsmanto
If you can find a 16x LiteOn I'd go for one of those - on back order right now.
Or check out the The Pioneer 111 & 112
They are all pretty easy to install.
Just open the case (have pc power off and unplugged), unscrew the old drive (screws on the side) disconnect from the ide & power cable and audio cable (if has one).
Change the jumper pin on the back to which place it will be on the ide cable - master or slave. Most drives come set to slave.
Just check the back of the one you have now and change it to that.
Here's a guide.
Now just reconnect to the ide cable, power and audio (if you have one), screw it back in, case back on. Power up and you should be good.

Hmmm from what I found on this cd master looks like an older one. On it's way out maybe(?)
Depending the if it's the B, F or H model here's a link from firmware that may help - link
Type in SC-140.
The firmware is anywhere from 2002 -2004.
Have you tried playing like an original cd or some program cd to see if the drive picks it up?

Ok check Nero and see what is has listed.
In Nero go to Tools (or ToolKit w/ Nero 6)>InfoTool>drive tab.
The make and the model of the drive will be listed in the drop down.
There's a field on this tab that will also list the firmware.
What does Nero have?
Does it have problems with all cd's or just some?

yeah I kinda thinking it kaput too. It's 8 year olds and the last firmware on this one was in 2003 - it's BS14.
Don't know if that's the one you tried.
Just make sure when you connect the drive to the ide cable you have the jumper pin on the drive set to the position on the cable (like master to master)
Drives esp just cd-dvd rom combos (reads & writes cd, reads dvd's) are really cheap. Even a dvd burner is cheap too.

Hey for 17.99 you can't beat it! And it probably is new - that's about the price of them - burners at newegg around $35.

Yeah I've bought 2 drives and other pc stuff from them - never a problem.
Some may be in an 'open' box - usually not a problem and they always list this info.
edit: grammar errors ;)
