I am using a SONY DVD RW DW-D22A BYS2 (ATA) as my drive and attempting to write to some DVD-R with the media code MCC 03RG20 using ImgBurn, although I get the same results with Nero

When I try to write it errors without beginning to write. I/O Error

(I think all that is correct)

what would I need to do to get these working together?

Not a lot of support on this drive firmware wise so here are a few suggestions:

You can try different discs though MCC are usually very good discs.

This drive is an oem LiteOn SOHW-1633S so you can crossflash to the LiteOn firmware BSOY patched - here's a link.
If by chance this drive is still under warranty the crossflash would void it.

Check and make sure all the drive are in DMA mode - here's a guide
