i have burned perfect dvds with DVD-R. i have used +r to but eveytime it starts to skip near the middle except one certain dvd player. what is the best type of media to use
Drives like Benq/Plextor/and Lite-on use special utilities- Qsuite/Plextools/and lite-on has their own utility as well. Some programs may also help them to booktype: Dvd shrink/Nero/Dvdinfopro
Drives like LG can also booktype. NEC can do do some booktyping-DVD+R DL,and pioneer needs hacked firmware called the Buffalo firmware. NEC also has hacked firmware to help it booktype on certain model#s.
If you have booktyping capable drive, definitely the plus format like Memnock posted.
You've got plus and dash formats. The players you plan on playing your backups will decide which format they prefer.
After setting your backups to dvd-rom,they will have a higher stand alone player compatability rate. This takes care of No Disc errors,what a player may display because it doesn't recognize your backups if using plus or dash.No disc,Dity disc,Wrong region,Wrong format,or Illegal disc.
Booktyping usually doesn't affect playback issues like freezing,skipping,jumping,and pixellation.
For those playback issues,look at your media quality. Quality Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim should prevent a lot of those issues. Other things to help out:
1) Burn half the rated speed of your blank media.
16x media,burn at 8x if it's quality.
2) Keep burn from reaching the outer edge of disc,backup target around 4360 mbs with quality media,4300 mbs with crap media. This usually takes care of playback issues at the end of your backups.
3) Keep compression to a minimum.
4) No paper/sticker labels. Heat build-up,wobbling,peeling.
5) No multi-tasking during the dvd backup process.
6) Burner quality: Look for the latest firmware update for that burner. It controls the writing strategy. There's also some crap drives out there that can put a slew of errors on your backups.
7) After ruling out the above and issues narrowed down to a single stand alone player,run a lens cleaning disc in that drive at fault. This is last resort,before drive replacement.Those lens cleaning discs are known to ruin drives,I can attest to that.
Stand alone players can pick out a slew of different things. If it shows back playback,you got something wrong with it. Since it stops in the middle,should be an easy fix with quality media and a sensible burn speed.

I was going to ask this exact question weeks ago (+ and -)
I am using TDK +R they work perfect for me on stand alone player and dvd drive
I heard Pioneer had something to do with the - format and I am going to trial them because my drive is Pioneer but most drives are made for both plus and minus formats.
recommended media check the forums alot of people swear by Verbatim and to look for the japan manufactured media.
I use TDK they do well for me.
trial and error but never go for the cheapest no name brands spend a little on the brand names like Verbatim Sony TDK Benq the list goes on
