Hi All,

I recently bought a second hand Toshiba SD-R6252 drive for my laptop.
It works fine, at good enough rates reading both cds and dvds and even burns cds ok, but regarding dvds, I couldn't find so far one brand that it'll recognize to burn... I've tried TDK+&-R HP-R Verbatim+R and even Nashua+R. All are recognized as empty dvds, but it doesn't allow Nero to burn them...
Have been searching everywhere but so far haven't found any firmware newer than the one I have (1A14), to solves this.
Did anyone find a solution for it?
Getting kind of desperate here...
Cheers.

What Message does Nero report when attempting to burn or copy a disk

It just keeps asking for an empty dvd... It recognizes the dvds as closed and therefore wont allow burning them...

In the first post it was said.
?All are recognized as empty dvds, but it doesn't allow Nero to burn them..?.

And in the last
?It just keeps asking for an empty dvd... It recognizes the dvds as closed and therefore wont allow burning them...?

These would seem conflicting

The second would indicate that the disks Were Not Empty and were closed, when Nero wanted an Empty.disk
This would indicate that the disks already had information on them

My question was to ascertain what Nero was reporting

If they were +RW disks, had sufficient empty space, and the Toshiba would accept them. I should think they would be usable.
It is a distinct possibility that the secondhand drive is defective

There have been mentions, as yours. to this drive and possible problems with it, on other forums.
You might want to check this out, on this and the other forums

I do not have this Laptop unit or any Toshiba unit and am not familiar with its use of +/- disks, or what it will accept

I have found that the Toshiba is a very good unit but can be picky, but should have no problems with a Verbatim DVD disk ? or + if the unit uses either or both

I use almost exclusively Verbatim +/-R and +RW disks and have had no problems
They are very good disks.

Hi,

I've checked other forums and one of them suggests two interesting things:
1st - even with firmware 1A14, this drive wont recognize (to burn) 16x dvd's, only 8x at most.
2nd - Some guys reported successfull burns with the following media (which I don't have yet, but am willing to look for):
EMTEC, DVD+R, Single Sided, 8x certified. www.emtec-international.com
PLATINUM, DVD+R (Plus Format), Speed 8x.
SONIC DVD+R
TDK DVD+R 4X
Memorex DVD+R 8X
Philips 2.4x DVDRW
Maxell 4x DVDRW

Hope this is usefull for others who read this. Also would like to suggest anyone to report other successfull media...

For this firmware:

Hi again,

Have you tried any of the media I wrote about in my last post? My problem so far is finding it...
in the mean time, I found yesterday some DVD+R 1-8x TDK and got one to try it out. Although I didn't actually burn it, it was recognized as "burnable" at 2.4x... (it's the first one!!!)

Hope this helps...

I'm using Nero 7 and I'm pretty sure this is not a software related issue...

Hi again,

In the mean time I looked for some media and found some Emtec - 2 types of media:
EMTEC DVD+R 8x Certified
and EMTEC DVD+R 8x Printable.
The first ones were the ones reported to work. They actually work, but only at 2.4x instead of 8x...
The second ones weren't recognized... Crap!!!
Is there any media that actually works at 8x???

This drive (Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6252) is only able to write at 2.4x speed on 8x or lower DVD+R/W media at the latest firmware revision 1A14. That means that 16x dvd+r/w or any dvd-r/w media won't work, and unfortunately there hasn't been a firmware update since 2004.

To solve your "problem" go buy some 8x or lower DVD+R discs.

As for the burning speed, this drive is only capable of writing at up to 2.4x speed. On newer drives you can write at 8x and 16x speed on appropriate media.
