I/O has several different manufacturers of their 16x DVD-RW drives:

Benq
Lite-on
BTC
Empa

Try this program and tell us how it recognizes your drive:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm

Sometimes it'll give a generic code like 16x/IDE/atapi dvdrw or something like that. Look toward the right of what it says your model# is and that's the current firmware version, post back that info. The firmware version will help us find out who actually built your drive.

1 thing you can try-if you have Windows XP- go into device manager/cdrom-dvd drive/locate that drive/uninstall the drivers/and reboot. Sometimes a drive can get lost and makes it look like you got a cd-rw drive only. This may help.

2.23 firmware could be of 2 different drives:

NEC 6500A,but this is a newer model,so probably not your model.

Optorite DD0203,which could possibly be your drive and latest fw update is for 2004.It's a 4x dual format burner. You can get some info here, scroll towards the top of the link:

Edit: Here's some more:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1605

What speed rate of media are you using?

Older drives will have firmware issues with the newer 16x media.

Edit: Here's some more info, and the media feedback only list 4x speed media and problems with 8x media-usually firmware issue. By not having newer firmware updates for certain drives,it's a way that a manufacturer is making that drive obsolete-so you have to buy their newer drives.

You may have to find some older 4x media because most of the 8x is nearly extinct and 16x is the norm.

That code that your pc recognizes your burner is a generic string, making it harder to find out which drive you have. The current firmware version helps narrow it down, but several other brand names may use a similar letter/number code.

That generic string ID can also be a re-badged drive. Example: Phillips making some of their drives, but using Benq 1620's on their rebadges with their name on it. Similar models, but totally different chipsets and firmware.

I/O Magic have other companies make their drives, and multiple manufacturers on their 16x writers..

What's the speed rating of your blank media?

I too have an I/O Magic drive that's stopped burning DVDs. It reads and rips them fine but the burn always fails. I checked the I/O website and they have no firmware for mine. I'm clueless what to do at this point, it's fairly new too so I'm kinda pissed, lol.

ID String: DVDRW IDE 16X
FW Version: A089

Nelly: That may be a BTC drive:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1913

The ID string matches, but not the A089 fw version. It's an older drive,so the chances of not recognizing 16x media will be greater.Try to find slower speed media.
