PS2 (v12) doesn't read CD-based

It seems kind of odd that it happened all of a sudden. Prior to today, last time I had tried playing a CD-based PS2 game was quite a few months ago, and it worked fine.

For some reason my PS2 is not wanting to read CD-based discs anymore. This includes PSX games.

A while ago I was wanting to load my Swap Magic CD version, so I popped it in my PS2, and it doesn't want to work.

I use a fliptop for my backups, so when the top was open, I can see that the disc keeps spinning, then stopping, spinning, then stopping, in approximately 1 second intervals.

Then, after a few times, it goes to the menu, and just says "Disc Read Error".

My DVD version of Swap Magic works fine, as well as all my DVD backups. It's just CDs that don't work, as well as PSX (cd obviously) games.

Any one have an idea of why this is happening? I rarely ever played CD -based games.... I have 2 copies of the CD version of Swap Magic -- one that is well used, and the other practically brand new and never used. Both great condition but neither works.

Yes. One of the disc has some minor scratches. But, like I said, I have a completely brand new CD SM as well, and it doesn't load either.

And actually I forgot to mention this. I don't know if it's a coincidence but I did the PS2 diagnosis and I think the next time I tried to load the Swap Magic it loaded and worked fine. Then the next time after that I tried and it didn't work anymore :(

Oh ok. I can't help I'm afraid. I had the same problem with my PS2 and successfully fixed it but it's a fat PS2. I don't know how to fix the slimline PS2.
Good luck anyway, I hope you fix it.

I think slimline PS2s are a bit different. Instead, it has a little white gear, not sure if that's the same thing.

I googled the error the other day, but now I can't find the page. I'm gonna put in my CD game again to get the exact error cause I don't remember it, but that's how I got it.

One thing, it's not actually a disc read error, it was some other sort of read error, but not the same infamous one on fat PS2s.

ok. the exact error is "the disc could not be read". it shows this error only if I go into the browser after it couldn't read the CD.

Apparently it's not the same as a disc read error.

I found the FAQ that I was looking for: http://faqs.ign.com/articles/390/390535p1.html

It says not to adjust the voltage if my PS2 reads games on DVDs but will not read games on CDs, or vice-versa.

I don't know what to do then.

First sign of your laser dying is not being to read CD-R as they are harder my recomendation before you open it you can read DVD-R right just convert the CD game into a game that plays on a dvd make an iso get isobuster extract all the files into one folder write down the order the files were in ISobuster. open Scanlite 3.6 (google it or search afterdawn they have links) then select the entire folder then scan it it will patch then open Nero burning rom select UDF/ISO and put all the files in the same order they were in Isobuster insert them in that order Nero might change it but as long as you insert them from 1st to last in the Isobuster order you are fine.
90% of CD games it works.
