Building a dedicated Server

Me and some friends from a college club have lately been thinking about trying to put together a box to use as an FTP server (as well as some other minor things in the future, like a small forum) since we're a language club and want to be able to easily share/store our media.

Sadly, none of us really know where to begin with this. We'll all be putting this together out of our own pockets, so we'd like to keep it cheap. What type of parts do we need to build something like this? Should we use Linux or XP?

Any help is appreciated.

well, cheap will not be great for running things like a forum. FTP would not take much.

Just some links to get your research started. You are probably better off finding a hosting site and chiping in your money and paying monthly for your forum. Seeing how quick electronics get out of date these days it will be a thing that will constantly have to be updated to keep up, especially if your forum gets a lot of traffic. Most people i know who run forums just find good hosting sites and use those.
