Best low cost/free audio codec for live streaming a radio remote?

Hi, friends.

Our radio station has done several "live remotes" using Windows Media Encoder 7.1 over DSL lines to stream back to the station computer, then out over the air.

I'd like better fidelity at low bitrates (say, 64kbps) so eventually we could try to stream via Generation III wireless: Verizon CDMA or Cingular GSM. ALSO: The latency (lag time) via WME is horrible... 10 - 15 seconds of buffering!

It looks like Quicktime Broadcaster with AAC would be better, but the "broadcast computer" has to be Mac. Our laptop is a PC, 500 MHz with 192 Meg RAM.

Any other ideas? Should we upgrade to Win Media Encoder 9? Again, this is direct from on-location back to station... no video... one direction only. With virtually Zero budget...! - Thanks!

Hi.

There'll be a 64kbps listening test at http://www.hydrogenaudio.org starting today or tomorrow. When it's finished the results will tell you what gives better fidelity than WMA ... .

I don't know much about sreaming, but codecs that should be good at 64kbps are Ogg Vorbis and HE AAC (HE AAC encoder is part of Nero 6). To find out more about these formats and their abilities you might want to visit http://www.hydrogenaudio.org forums.
