i am going to try to build a computer for my birthday this year and i wanted to know if this setup would work well. this is my first build and just wanted to make sure if i had everything right. i am not a gamer so i dont need a high performance video or mobo, but i think it should work just fine with ubuntu and beryl. any advice would be great

although you will see mostly higher end system, you can look through the posts in this section and look at peoples signature lines, they usually list what their system has. It may give you some idea's

my budget is about 400 and i think that i will stick with the amd because it is cheaper than the intel.the amd x2 3600 cost $90 and the intel core 2 duo 1.86ghz is $180. it is mainly a price thing. but other than that do the parts look compatable?

....no offense; and even though I myself am using an AMD rig atm; I myself would think that a c2d would do just a good/better than any amd as far as price/performance.

ya i was planning on overclocking the thing, the procesor can be overclocked to about 3ghz. i dont really have a budget but 400 is what these parts cost right now. im looking at newegg for all of these parts so i am getting good deals on them. and halen im not building this for serious performance or anything, this is just going to be an average computer to replace this 5 year old dell that i have been using. also does anyone know if the video card that i listed above can run vista aero. i know that it can run beryl pretty easily. thanks for all the advice

I'd say that about AMD because the X6800 is the fastest CPU out there and it's intel.
That PC you are building would do well but i'd recommend spending 30-50 more and buying a much more decent card then the 7300LE like a 7600 at least if you don't want to buy the 256mb version of the 7300LE won't do a lot more a bit but it wont cost alot more either.
7300LE chokes on most things.
Trust me no matter what people say they all of us with PC's will try to run a game on the computer wheter it be tommorow or in a year everyone has done it LOL!.
And if you are seriously not considering playing games you wouldnt need that X2 you could get a Pentium 4 2.8ghz would cost less and would run normal app's as well as the X2 if not better cause most apps arent dual core which means an intesive app say a game if it needs 2.8ghz you might struggle because it wants 2.8ghz out of one core ive seen FS:X do it alot one CPU is on idle (1%) the other is about to explode at (99%).
Rethink it a bit that's what i recommend and come back in a few hours after you really really know what you want and need.

if your on a tight budget i would just get a pentium d 805 $80 and oc it then i would get a nvidia 7600 around $120 and its decent for gaming

ok. i have decided to go with a better video card. a 7600gt something and a little more ram. so its going to be about 500 now. also people stoped posting in this thread over a week ago. just thought you should know

FYI, Intel will announces a price cut on all processors pretty soon. I heard some rumors; it might be on April, 22 or somewhere around that, but it will be during the 2nd Quarter.

Also you might want to invest some money on better PSU, because the one that comes with the box are most time generic, and it could easily fried your board or whatever. Also the ram you're buying those are fine for stock, but have no OC capability.

it sounds u kinda want something like what i want to make. i like Intel better then amd just because ive only had Intel processors.
