NEED: any OS X subtitling apps for pros?

I used to make a living off of subtitling 10-15 years ago, as satellite and cable hit the old home country. Could be fun jazzing up the old Spanish and French to sub some of the more obscure titles out there.

There are solutions using iMovie, but I want a free-standing app, which will not only keep time with a particular film, but also be able to import various sub-formats in order to adjust the syncronicity.

Am actually willing to purchase a license, if it's the right program.
