Hi ,

I recently bought a spindle of 100 TY DVD-R from Rima.com after hearing everyone rave about how good this media is. My only question is this:

Why is the crappy media in stores 15 or 20 dollars for like 15 discs, when the best media is available in packs of 100 for 25 or 30 dollars>?? Shouldn't the better media be more expensive??

THanks for any reply

Well, it's like anything really (mass produced and distributed fomr warehouses anyway).. the more you buy, the cheaper it tends to be.

And also, the better media doesn't have to be much more expensive because it's how the disk is manufactured that makes them better quality..

I'm sure someone will be able to give you a more technical, detailed answer, but I'm not going to. If JoeRyan is around, he'll be able to answer you within an inch of your life ;-)

Well, because stores want to soak the uninformed general public. Take Verbs for example, a 50 pack sells for regular price of approx. $34 but I wouldn't buy it at that price! I would just wait a week or two until it's on sale for $12.99. Most people don't do that. Stores love it and if they're willing to pay those inflated prices then hey who are we to stop them?

In one word "OVERHEAD"

The stores have to pay for overhead like electricity, employees wages, advertisment and so on.

Anything you buy online is going to be cheaper no matter what your looking for. I can buy computer parts at half the price online and this is for the same reason. Also Maxell, Memorsux and other brands prices are usually a little higher because they pay more for advertisment. Why do you think Nike shoes cost more than Addidas? It's not because they are a better shoe, but so they can cover all of the millions they spend on advertisment and endorsments (they had to pay Michael Jordon and Tiger Woods somehow).

yes What they said and more ! Especially Advertising cost a they Have mentioned ! Branded /retail Media Sony, ,Maxell , Ecet... Advertises on Radio , Print, TV ect... Which means They Have to factor in expense To the Medias Cost! Where as Brands that are sold mainly in bulk or Wholesale Like Taiyo yudens May rely mainly On their Reputation Of Quality & Word of Mouth ! and or Only advertise mainly through Their online outlets Like Supermediastore.com , meritline .com, Rima.com ect...Also Media bought online /wholesale /in bulk ect... usually has a lower production cost because although it s made buy a quality Manufacturer ,Taiyo Yuden , Verbatim , Ritek, Ricohjpn ect... it will often not be marked on the label surface of the disc as to the actual Brand - Like retail Disc are ! as well as the Packaging will tend to be plain and nondescript as well ! no Fancy Schmancey Cellophane wrappers & pretty colored paper sleeves around the Spindles ! Just a smallheneric label opr maybe none at all , So your Buying in bulk, With lower production cost , lower Advertising cost lower overhead as the others have mentioned before ! adds up to lower cost per disc ! Also Often you do not pay sales tax when buying online as opposed to local retailers !and As They have said Some media Like Taiyo Yuden isn't sold directly under their own brand name( Brand labelled) like retail media ! & or It Maybe found Rebranded /Oem'ed under another name like The MIJ Sony/taiyo Yudens or The MIJ Fuji's /Taiyo yudens ... Also Don't Pay the Inflated Regular Prices for retail media wait for yhe sales !!!!!
