Hi there,

I just purchased a Wiikey from mod-chip.com. Before doing so, I sent them an email asking if they knew of an installer in my area. (Tucson, AZ) They responded and said there were several in my area, and they'd give me details after my order was complete. After I made the order, I got access to a list of installers, none of which was anywhere near me. I've tried craiglist and posting on various forums, and short of shipping the Wii to someone, (Which I am not sure that I am comfortable doing,) the only alternative is to do it myself.

I have very little soldering experience, most of which was in shop class several years ago. I'm a little rusty. Currently my plan is to open up my old Dreamcast or a controller or something and do some practice before it goes down. I'm planning a wired install, since most people seem to suggest that's the easier way to go.

Now here is something I'm wondering, and forgive me if my ignorance is showing. Would it work if I were to simply placea bead of solder on the connection, then before it cools, stick the wire in the solder? What is the reccomended way of doing this?

Thanks for any help. I am still looking to see if I can find someone else to do this, but failing that, I will give it my best effort.

OK, I just found some good info in another thread on the solder process, and now I feel more confident. Any info would still be appreciated.

no do not do it that way. Use flux, flux is your friend. Place some flux on both the solder point and your wire. Melt just a touch of solder to the end of the wire. Then heat up the solder point and place the wire on it. The heat from the melted solder on the solder point should instantly melt the solder on the end of the wire and bond the two. Personally, I think the wired solution is far more of a hassle than just using the quick solder way. If you know what your doing, its done in a snap and you'll have no wires breaking off down the road or coming loose for any reason.
