Internal or external? IDE or SATA?

See here

http://www.pcmech.com/show/harddrive/43/

One thing they don't make clear, is that if you drop one of the little tiny mounting screws into your motherboard, you MUST get it out before you power up!

ah, a SCSI hard drive... so do you have the relevant SCSI controller built in to the motherboard, or on a controller card, ie PCI card or whatever ?

what model dell do you have? i doubt you have a scsi port, and just for reference, if your machine's main drive is IDE, i doubt you have a any SATA ports, either.

you could find a pci controller for you scsi drive on ebay, newegg.com, etc etc and use it that way.

It's 70 -odd GB. An 80 GB IDE drive would be cheaper than a SCSI controller. Hell, Google shows Adaptec SCSI adapters costing 150 UK pounds ($300) upwards... a 320 GB IDE from novatech costs around 60 UK pounds... 80 GB around 25 pounds... His friend gave him something he couldn't use, now he's finding he can't use it either.

well, than you can do two things.

1.) sell the drive on ebay, use the funds to buy a more current drive.

2.) buy a new drive anyway, take the old drive out back and shoot at it, run it over with a car, play crazyball with it, and whatever else you think of with the resilient little fecker.

i had a similar situation a while back. i chose the latter option and have no regrets. ^.^

Aus and indie.. check in the linux forums and see if you can work out what's going on here.

I see it very clearly.. There is a place called google, which is feeling neglected somehow. Dan's already blown a fuse, and I don't do help by pm...

Something smells a bit fishy around here. His "friend" just "gave" him a brand new $350 SCSCI hard drive still in its packaging?

People don't give away brand new kit like that... Not with a resale value in that range. You also don't buy a scsi drive "by mistake" They always have to be ordered in, and any shop will accept them for exchange/refund if unused.
I had no trouble at all selling a heap of older and well used ones late last year..
I believe there is some serious posting of BS happening to pad up the post count and get attention..

Well, I'm glad you said it, not me! I was going to say he should ask his friend to look out for IDE drives in future...

yeah, a hard drive of any sort, falling off a truck onto your head, often offends :P

It's surprising how often people are "given" or "find" cell phones as well, isn't it?
