OMG i came to this site to learn how to use programs and computer stuff in general, And basicaly i am absolutely FED UP WITH people telling me how i should stick to windows. FOR crying OUT LOUD I KNOW U WERENT ALL BORN WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO WORK PC's (sry if it seems as if im yelling I AM) when i joined this site i fell in love with everyones willing ness to help those who dont know(anything/verry little) about the things they wish to learn.
for the last few days i have been trying to get my feet wet with something new (LINUX in general) and all i have found is how everyone tells me "google it" GOOGLE WHAT I DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL THAT WAS i have no problem learning tech of any sort. i am absolutly in love with pc's and OS's and anything people can do with em; but for crying out loud people dont F***ing bash me for asking you guys (who are suposed to be here to help) for a few things ok yeah i posted a lot of stuff in the last few days find if u think i should post lss PM ill listen i really will. as for the who reason i dont like SUSE 10.2 its not cuz i (knowingly) find it difficult its cuz every where i go PEOPLE (who im trying to get some kind of help from) tell me they dont like it and/or dont use it so they cant help me.
wouldnt you be absolutly pissed if everywhere u went people told u they cant help beacuse they dont like it nor do they wanna use it. for me it totally pisses me off to have a question and no be able to get help from people i have came to admire about thier computer knowledge. i found this site and thought OMG this is so awsome i can get help and learn anything i want (pc related) from you people who are just so damn smart. i even go out of my way to direct people here for pc questions and tell them u can find /get help for anything u need on your pc they are kind and smart as hell(of corse there are a few who prefer to flame than help but thats life u can deal i try to and am doing good at it atm).
Resently i am just getting mad a few people who keep telling me how dumb i am IM NOT DUMB JUST NEW for crying out load people help me out i cant learn from just reading i need to read-do- and ask for advice from people who i can trust to send me in the right direction.
i do wanna learn but a few of the guides im trying to read (that people on here sent me to) keep asuming that i know scertain stuff well i dont so i come here to ask for advice and find out that people treat me like SH** cuz im "Very New" to linux. well i am tyring to learn. and instead of trying me like crap why not say "ok to learn how to install thinks you need to learn the bash prompt commands" and ids say ohh ok ic ty (then either google it and look for a site i can understand or ask for some recomendations)
all im trying to say is for crying out load yes i have alot of Q's but dont get pissed point me in the right dirrection. and for crying out load lear to be a teacher not a sarcastic know it all who gets pissed if they are inconvienced for helping out a green horn.
i know somones going to bash me for this but i dont give a crap.
id rather learn then waste my time getting shot down bye some of you people (i have only found 2 people willing to help me on this thread)

So go and learn then.. instead of asking about every tiny detail.
The world of linux is full of people who are learning. We all have, some of us years ago when help wasn't available.. It meant wading through huge books, with an irate boss getting more and more angry that his production line/stock control/payroll wasn't happening.. and not always finding the answers.
At least we are honest.. I can't help specifically with suse because I DON'T USE IT!! so I don't know how to do things with it.. OK?? Is there something wrong with being honest and telling you I don't know?
As for the RTFM attitude.. TOUGH.. There are only 4 or 5 linux users here.. and only me as a full time user, everybody else uses windows too. It may come as a surprise to somebody who seems to demand 1 to 1 attention constantly. I have a full time job, and a linux project of my own to work on. I don't ask anybody for help with it.. because basically nobody else knows very much about what I'm doing.. anywhere..
Welcome to the world of professional computer op's. we do help, but basics are really not worth our time and effort, especially with linux.. There is an internet full of linux information.. I mean heaps and heaps.. from the most basic to things even professional techs look at and think WTF??? What do you make of this then?

To be precise, it's not the disk that's slow, but the CPU gets really unresponsive when the disk is
intensively accessed.
I made this test with kernel 2.4.27-2-686 and 2.6.8-2-686 from the debian stable repository(sarge):
time dd if=/dev/zero of=test.file bs=1024 count=9000000
the execution time on the otherwise idle machine is almost the same; however under 2.4 i get an
average load of 2.5, and under 2.6 i get a sky high load of 10 at the end of the process.
One note: my SATA drive is called /dev/hdc under 2.4, and /dev/sda under 2.6; i guess that's because
of ata_piix?

hdparm -I /dev/sda does not work, i'll look for the patch.

CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set, and i have CONFIG_SCSI_SATA=y, if that's what you meant.
Could the problem be that under 2.6 ata_piix is running in combined mode? I've seen similar problems

Ohh PAN5Y.. poor dude, stuck with vista sucks..
Where did you get gentoo from? That block of puzzlement is from the kernel group chewing over why DMA isn't working with the 2.6.12 version.
It is still giving us problems.. I'm getting very slow burns for some reason too. It was available because it's what I happened to be reading when I was making the post.. LMAO!!

Did our forefathers complain about the lack of roads and stores in the new world? Did they bitch and moan because their cell phones wasn't invented yet? Fast food meant that the critter could outrun you and your horse. Did they sit down and cry at the first "uncrossable" river? Hell no, they got up off their fat arsses and went out and learned how to do it themselves, (without the internet I may add, the only Googling they did was at all the spectacular scenery never before seen by western mankind) Face it, if you are a main stream mutton, stick with windoze, if you have a sense of adventure, are a pioneer at heart, and love a challenge, go with Linux, otherwise, just stick with AOL.

First off, we are not "supposed" to do a damn thing.
this is a forum, not your own private "help, i'm an illiterate idiot who doesn't know how to use software specific forums and google, please spoonfeed me" helpdesk.
We have better things to do than babysit you through your first steps.

You know how i learned linux ? TRIAL AND ERROR, and i READ THE F**KING MANUAL.
No google to help me, no forums, no other people.
All there was was example code snippets on BBS's, nothing more.
Linux has to be the most documented OS replacement ever, it even comes WITH BUILT IN MANUALS, and yet you have to ask how to install drivers ?
Hell, you wouldn't even go and look for them yourself.
You needed us to do that, because you didn't "know which ones i need".
Riiight.
You know what your system looks like, what hardware you have, don't you ?
Then you know what drivers you need.
Then again, if you don't even know what your computer is made of, then you have no business with linux whatsoever.
You complain about guides assuming a certain knowledge.
Well then if you don't know what something means, google the f***ing term you moron.
And for that matter, never heard of wikipedia either ?
The problem isn't you being a linux newbie, the problem is you're a dimwit who doesn't even have enough common sense to realise that if you don't know something, you should LOOK IT UP.
And for the love of god, LEARN SOME ENGLISH AND DROP THE BLOODY TEXTSPEAK ALREADY... FFS

If you want specific linux help, most distros have their own forums to help you out. You should try out ubuntu, it has the most built in hardware recognition out of all the linux distros I have tried out. You might have to install some other stuff to get certain file formats to work but you will at least have your hardware recognized. Ubuntu's community is also very good so you might have a better experience asking for help there. Hope this helps.

No c++ compiler (vital)
No make (also vital)
No i2c tools modules..(well not the important ones anyway) not that vital but very important for detecting unusual hardware..
Incompatabilities.. Lots and lots.. works ok out of the box, just don't try adding anything to it.
Ohh.. I forgot to say.. security issues.. *cough* I'll repeat that.. SECURITY ISSUES.. ** waves red rag under Dan's nose**
Seriously.. look at the other threads in this section before making stoopid suggestions.. We're the n00buntu bashers club.. Giving it a good ragging since 2006..

Well you all seemed to have given him what he deserved.LOL The only thing I should add is he's just plain LAZY. Probably doesn't/didn't do homework in school, English comes to mind. Start with the basic stuff and build on it. You didn't learn to do square roots until AFTER you learned to multiply!

And there I was thinking you did square roots after learning long division and factors.. We learned to do them with pencil and paper.. nightmare.. Hang on.. What am I talking about?.. it's go for a button on a calculator (whatever one of those is) or so I'm told by the children, who can't work out how much change they are supposed to get in the shop without looking at the till.

Wordplay time.. de-evolution.. could also be put as a verb i.e de-evolve = devolved? as in split, seperate?.. Like the way an amoeba multiplies?
Ahh that explains so much.. Why there are more and more lower life-forms around.. They can reproduce themselves by mitosis rather than the sexual joining/appending of materials found in meiosis.. In those terms it all becomes clear. they can multiply on their own anywhere the environment is favourable...

nghtpnshr Due to the fact that you haven't replied obviously means that you have no argument. Just for the record this is a forum
(A computer conference having an initiator, members, readers, and possibly moderators.) which means people come here to discuss topics. If you choose to ask a question it is upto the readers if they wanna reply with an answer/comment. If someone says they don't use linux only windows coz they have heard its better, then you don't complain.
Why should we sit here and explain an entire topic to you about linux or whatever, when you can go on google and use the internet for the information it contains which has already been written out with examples and explanations.
You cannot complain at me or anyone else in the forum because they do not know about variables and strings in VB. They can still have the comment that they used VB couldn't pick it up and think that html is better. Then good on them just accept it google tells you almost everything in terms of "programs and computer stuff in general".
So be grateful you got the replys you have :)
