Hi there. I am fairly new to both this board, and home theater. I have a question about subs, and the LFE connection. I searched this forum and found nothing that helped so I am hoping that someone can shed some light here. I have a JBL 8' powered sub, and a Pioneer VSX-917V-K 7.1 channel receiver, with a dedicated RCA sub output (obviously). My JBL sub has a left and right RCA input, but it also has a single LFE input. The manual for the subs says absolutely nothing about this LFE input, so my question is, is there a difference between hooking up the sub using a spliter and connectiing the two RCA to the sub output on my receiver, or hooking it up with a single RCA to the LFE input? Also, my Pioneer on screen menu has a setting for LFE adjustment, Off--10db-0db, 0 being default. I haven't touched this setting yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hook the sub up by way of the LFE output on your receiver that is the proper way if you did not have a LFE output you could use other inputs

From the Crutchfield Advisor:

Quote:
How do I connect my new powered subwoofer to my receiver?

Almost all amplified subwoofers have two different types of inputs available:
Line Level inputs (RCA jacks).
Speaker Level inputs (terminals for speaker wire).
If your receiver has a dedicated subwoofer line level output, we recommend connecting your subwoofer to this jack. Most receivers will have just one (mono) subwoofer output, while quite a few subs require two inputs. You can use an RCA "Y" adapter cord , which is a cable with one female RCA jack at one end, and two male RCA plugs at the other. Some receivers require menu settings (such as "sub-on" or "front speakers-small") that must be made before the sub output will be active.

If your receiver does not have a dedicated subwoofer output, or if the sub needs to be located more than twenty feet from the receiver, you can use the speaker level inputs. Connect these inputs to the main speaker outputs of your receiver, then run the subwoofer's speaker outputs to the main left and right speakers.

If you can get your hands on a May 2000 issue of Sound and Vision Magazine (perhaps your local library), there is an excellent 3 page article...Subwoofer Setup Made EZ by Tom Nousaine

Contents: from unpacking to hookup to fine tuning. Highly recommended!
