Having succesfully used Nero Recode to convert DVD's for viewing on my Archos, I'm a bit stumped as to why it's not working with DVR-MS files as recorded by our Media Center. I believe it should be able to convert these files as well but every time I try the process fails before it even gets started. Any ideas? TIA

For whatever reason, the Nero DirectShow filters/codecs are choking on your file. I know there's been problems in the past when dealing with large files. I don't know if this is the case here or not as I don't use MC files or Nero for converting.
Can you import the files into Nerovision and use the Export function to get them into another mpeg4 format? That's tell you whether it's the filters/codecs or something else.
If that fails, try uninstalling Nero, running the Clean Tool, and then reinstalling a good version of Nero like 7.5.9.0.
You might want to do some research on the dvr-ms type of file. There are content protection schemes that might be effecting your ability to convert it. Whether you have edited out commercials might also have a bearing on what might work or not. Try converting some files from different sources to see if some have a content flag set and some without any editing done on them first.
Since Meta data is included in the file and Nero seems to be adhering to certain Microsoft standards, there could be some problems using certain types of software.
Well thanks for the replies guys. I don't edit the files anyway (not that savvy) so that's one less factor. I'm not sure about the copy protection though, I have tried recorded programs from more than one channel and it always behaves the same way. AVS video tools seems to be able to convert them but the finished product has serious lip-sync issues. Thanks again
