I've made a number of backups using DVD Shrink (Beta3.05) and Nero 6. Here's what I've been encountering:
When I back up a DVD (movie only) with compression. It operates flawlessly on my two stand alones and the HP 200i writer.
When I back up a DVD (movie WITH all the DVD extras) WITHOUT compression. It plays flawlessly on all my equipment also.
When I back up a DVD (movie WITH all the extras) WITH compression. It plays flawlessly on my stand alones..but will not operate properly when played back on the HP writer. The menus will not operate properly and the movie will freeze between chapters or when selecting a specific scene. ON some DVD's I've created...I cannot even access the movie to play from the start menu.
I've encountered the same problem when I've backed up a DVD WITHOUT compression where I have eliminated some of the extras using DVD Shrink..and then created a DVD with the re-authored information.
I am starting to think that my HP cannot handle compressed menus on my DVD Back-ups...or any menus that have been altered from the original in any way.
The HP DVD Writer can play all these re-authored and compressed movies fine when the files are played from my HD....the problem occurs when the files are written to a DVD.
Any Ideas?
I know many will argue that copying menus and extras only degrades the quality of the movie..and I concede that point. My question is about why the menus won't work on my HP writer rather than the merits of DVD authoring choices.
The DVD Drive has the latest firm ware installed and I'm using Power DVD ver 4.0 which came with the DVD Writer.
Thanks to all who respond

The first thing to do is try a differnt disc. Some poor quality discs don't handle compression very well. Also in DVD Shrink make sure you use analysis before ripping/compressing the files as this gives better quality compression. You should only leave in the menu and extras if the overall file and therefore the level of compression is not too great. Any compression greater than about 36% may not give a good result.

Thanks for responding Discmania. I have tried Memorex and Phillips DVD's with the same result. I always use "deep Analysis" on the compressed movies (and will never leave any extras or menus on a DVD with more than 25% compression, and then only on rare occassions)..but when a movie can fit on one DVD with all the extras and menus and I don't use any compresssion, I will back them up as a complete package. I'm finding that even my uncompressed DVD's that have menus and all the extras included on the back ups do not operate properly on my HP Writer (last two out of three I've done will not work properly). They work great on my two stand alone players. The files play fine off the HD..but not when written to a DVD and played on my HP Player/writer.
It's driving me crazy...trying to reason out why this is happening. If I try and force the issue on my HP writer.by using the slide advance (moving the movie ahead manually)..I get an error message that the disk may be damaged or dirty, and the player will not continue. I'm starting to think that it's a quirk in the HP 200i. The way that unit reads the DVD during play back and the flags that key the menu options or chapter starts. If it were a burn problem,,then I'd have a problem on the Stand alone players....and if it were a file problem..then they wouldn't play properly off the HD....so it has to be the way the HP is reading the completed DVD..as this is where the problem occurs.
Anyone else have a HP 200i and has experienced this problem?
Thanks

It does seem as though it's the writer in that case. Although it's burning OK it's not reading properly. If it's still under gaurantee I suggest you take it back. However before you do that I'd suggest changing your DVD player software. Power DVD is known to have bugs and is definitely not the best player. If you go here you can choose a different player to test:http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=dvd+player+for+PC&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%21+ Make sure you uninstall Power DVD first.

Most likely the problem is your DVD playing software. Have you tried playing an original copy of a DVD on your PC? If that doesn't work, than the problem is defintiely your program, or your burner, and it's highlly unlikely that it's the burner. Try a different program and see if you have the same results.

Funny you should ask Sly..... I did try exactly that with a movie I have "The Professionals"...a single sided DVD with no compression necessary. I backed the entire DVD to my HD. With the movie on my HD, I was able to access the scene selection menu, and click on all the different chapters in the movie and also watched play from Chapter 1 and make the switch to Chapter 2. I then burnied the files to a DVD and had the same problems as I mentioned in my previous posts....I could click on "secene selection" and get the menu..but when I clicked on a particular chapter..the DVD would freeze at that point (scene selection menu was still shown on the screen but no action to access the scene). I would then click on the play key again..and it would start playing the DVD from the beginning. The DVD will play the first chapter..but will freeze when trying to go to chapter 2...again..if I click on the play button...it restarts the DVD from the beginning.
My HP Writer plays the original DVD for "The Professinals" fine..I can access all the menus and navigate anywhere on the DVD..it's only on the burned copies..that I have problems. The copy play fine on my other players.
I've pretty much eliminated the movie files as being the problem..and I can't see where the actual software (Power DVD XP which I patched with the most recent update from the web site) as having any effect on the playing of the copied DVD..considering that it handles the original and the files on the HD without a hitch.
If I understand DVD layouts..there are flags placed thoughout the DVD (chapter beginnings, Special features, meuns etc.) and when the item on screen is selected...that selection searches for a flag on the DVD representing the item selected..and displays that selection or plays from that point of the movie. I'm thnking that the HP 200i is having problems accessing or interpreting the flags on the burned copy of the DVD (for wahtever reason) and cannot play from that point.
The other strange thing is that on this particular title...I can select "trailers" from the menu and it plays the trailer fine on the burned DVD.
If I backup just the movie..it plays fine..from start to finish and I can jump back and forth through the chpaters also.
I'm looking for the "Shell Answerman" to solve this problem for me:-) I know you're out there somewhere....please respond. hehehe
Thanks
