I would get occasional burn errors, like one of every 6 burns....but this past week I haven't had a sucessful burn yet. It gets about 85-95 percent complete, then fails. Frustrating. I'm a newbie at burning, so any criticisms will be taken as a learning experience!

Here is the log

I'd edit out that s/n before someone steals it! Starts with 4C....

Check the basics:

(1) Any change in media used.

(2) Clean your machine.

(3) Check for firmware updates for your writer.

I'd love to edit out the sn, but I don't see where to do that. I'm new to AfterDawn.....what the heck am I missing....I know it has to be something obvious (with the edit).

No change in media and I don't believe the firmware is an issue, although I always have trouble with the TSST website, so I'm not 100% sure whether there is an update.

I probably should clean the recorder though.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Disc Manufacturer: PRINCO -
This is not good quality media, try Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

You have Roxio installed, it clashes with Nero, to remove, run this zapper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Gwendolin,
Thanks for the help. I only have a few more cheap DVD's (a Christmas gift!).

I'm having trouble changing the DMA settings. On Vista when I go to the IDE controllers there is no Advanced Settings tab. So I can't even see if DMA is on, much less change it. Is this just a Vista issue? Or am I missing something obvious (again!).

From additional reading, how important is the DMA? My burn times don't seem out of line (15-20 minutes).

I was able to get rid of Roxio. Thanks for the link!

I appreciate a helpful forum....Why doesn't Nero run one on their web site? (Rhetorical question, no answer necessary to the last question!)

what speed do you burn at?

I'd say burning at 4x will take around 13-14 mins

Princo media can be awful invest in some good discs next time they don't cost alot - perhaps Verbatim Sony or my personal choice TDK.
there are heaps of people who discuss the quality media it's kinda tricky with us scattered all over the world which media we can purchase locally... but I tried Princo once, never again.
try the other recommendations from the afterdawn members and goodluck !!

I have some Verbatim discs.....I'll try that with my next burn attempt.

Right now I'm only burning at 2x. From reading on this site for the past couple of days, I think I'll move up to at least 4x. Other than not tying up the computer burning discs, what are the other advantages to burning at a higher rate?

Unless you're an impatient person you will hardly notice the time difference, it's only a few minutes for a full length movie.

in hindsight I should not have defamed Princo discs but I tried their cdr's years ago and had burn failures I don't know for certain if their dvd media are better but it pays to spend that little extra for brand-names one can trust.
I don't mean to conflict with others but I have learned the slower the burn speed the superior quality burn if you are patient enough to wait the extra time the less errors and higher quality.
increasing it above 12 times is almost asking for trouble but I might get slapped for saying that.
anything 4 times or under takes longer but better
I know everyone has different opinions but I do try and follow the majority and learn from them
cheers - let us know how the verbatim go and try and not multi-task whilst burning them if that helps too.

I finally had a chance to try a burn last night using the Verbatim discs.....and I was successful!

Here are the "corrections" I was able to make:
1) Cleared Roxio off my system
2) Cleaned the DVD burner
3) Switched from Prnco to Verbatim discs
4) Changed recording speed from 2x to 4x

Actually I didn't to anything to accomplish #4. Thats just the speed Nero said it was doing the burn whereas in the past it was always at 2x....it significantly cut my burn time, from around 15 minutes to about 7 minutes.

Thanks for all the help....I'm still waiting for Nero Support to contact me! Little quicker response time here!

good to hear, happy burning!!
Afterdawn members are pretty fast I have had replies to a thread in less than two minutes.
Nero on the other hand might take a week to respond lol.
if you like the Verbatim stick to them ... always good to get a brand of media one can trust
cheers
