subtitles won't appear!!

i just downloaded a movie which is a .mkv type file and there are subtitles with it which are in .ass file, i played the movie on Media Player Classic but the subtitles won't appear!!
usually they would but for some reason it isn't now, so then i tried
right clicking on the screen went to >Navigation>Subtitle language>english or unknown 1. i chose english but nothing happened?!i then tried messing with the options and but that didn't work either! can someone just help me find the subtitles??
