I've just been stuffing around with recording music onto my PC, and just as things started happening, Im afraid I may have stuffed something up. I'm recording from a MD unit into line in, which wasn't working properly, so I tried mic in (oops) which would have been a terrible mismatch of something.

Problem is - input still records WAY too high, but now my output is damped to such an extent that i have to turn my external amp up FULL volume to hear anything! This only happened after I started recording in, even mp3's played through the normal setup come through this way now. I cannot find any settings which look out of wack, and im not an ABSOLUTE dummy, I just feel like one!!

I am using Avance AC97, JVC external MD, external amplifier. Im afraid I may have damaged my soundcard by feeding it the wrong levels - does anyone have any less depressing solution suggestions than this?

Thanks in advance
Oliver

Probably you have changed some windows mixer settings for recording (e.g. wav volume, linein volume etc.). Try to change these settings back/ play with them (Doubleclick on loudspeaker in taskbar; there are seperate record and playback mixers.) If this doesn't help, I would backup my system Disk and restore from an older backup (before problems started) - or, if not available, reinstall the OS (only temporarily, later restore the backup...). If the sound is still changed it's the soundcard for sure.

yah, Ive been over the settings too many times my head is spinning. Looks like a system restore is the only thing that might work - if not, I've really bloody done it, eh?!!@#$!
