this is a quote from another board regarding "bricked" wii consoles i thought maybe it would be encouraging for those with bad luck with the paper mario bricking issue

As the Infectus, the multi system modchip, can access the and let users write to and downgrade the BIOS for the XBOX 360 and PS3 I contacted the company to ask if it were possible to do the same thing on the Nintendo Wii. I asked, as many users have accidently bricked their non-usa consoles by running the new Paper Mario game on it. I was told directly by Team Infectus that once they are finished working on the Playstation 3 functionality they will address the Wii issue so users with bricked consoles can get them back up and running.

I meant it would be cool if Team Infectus could find a way to get a Bricked Wii up and running again! That's what I meant! Sorry if I confused you...

This is for those who are reading this and want to know why Super Paper Mario is bricking some Wii's. It is due to Modchips that have region free capability's and playing an out of region game on their system without having the latest update.

Example: NTSC game disc playing on a PAL system.

If you do not have your PAL Wii system updated and put in the NTSC Super Paper Mario game (it has system update on the game disc) it will check to see what system version is on your Wii. If the system is not up to date then the game disc will update your system with the new firmware.

The hardware has region locks on them and can not be used with other region firmware this bricking the PAL system because it was updated with NTSC firmware.

To avoid this problem make sure your system is updated regularly before playing newer game titles. This will avoid the game disc updating your system with the wrong region system update.

Thinone, you are right. Team WAB is already using Infectus mod to dump the NAND from the wii and that is very promising for bricked wiis! Check it out here.

u need to stop crossposting
i have just replied to the other older thread u asked the same question in.

my question is will the disc ever try to update again now it knows ur upto date

ie if a firmware is released will the disc check now and then what firmware is out and try to update again or will it be later games that will have the latest updates on the disc that we need to look out for?

paper mario is alive and well now on my wii and my wii is unbricked at this moment in time :)

@Thinone

The game disc has the updated firmware on it. I would assume Nintendo has done this for Wii owners that don't have an INTERNET connection for their Wii.

If the game disc has a firmware update on it (like Super Paper Mario) the game disc will check your Wii system firmware. If your system has a firmware that is the same or higher then what is on the disc it will not update the system firmware.

If your Wii has a lower firmware then what is on the game disc then the game disc will update the firmware to the firmware that it has on the disc.

I am sure future games will have updated firmware on them as well. That is why it is important to keep your system updated through an INTERNET connection. To avoid updating your system with the wrong region firmware if using a region free Modchip.

If you do not have an INTERNET connection then you will need to find a game disc that has the latest firmware on it. Making sure you update with a game disc that is in the correct region as what your Wii system is.

Example: PAL game PAL System / NTSC-U game NTSC-U system / NTSC-J game NTSC-J System

I have no idea if updating an NTSC-J (Japan) game on an NTSC-U (United States)will brick the system. Maybe someone else could answer that. But I would use the above examples to be safe when updating the firmware with a game disc.

I think it would be best to update your system firmware first through the inet before playing games because IMO you can still brick your wii by getting an update for jap wiis on a us wii. >> firmware for PAL (E) firmware for US (U) firmware for japan (J).. thats what i think..

hey i have super paper mario USA and it works fine on my PAL wii.

i found out by reading that your USA super paper mario will work on your PAL wiis only if you have 2.2e and if you have internet able on your wii and you can acses google and any site from your nintendo wii.

this is becouse when you put in your super paper mario game it asks for an update to play it. if the game is USA and your wii is PAL only update if the internet on your wii is working.

it works by searching the web for a PAL update for this game then it will work fine ( like mine :) ) if you dont have the net working the paper mario game will say to your wii you dont have net ... here is my update and it will give you an USA update on your PAL wii makeing it to overwrite the PAL start up file to a USA start up file !!!

With the PS3 existing in about 13 households I'm curious as to why they would have started their work with that one first? Nintendo Wii is by far better selling and just so many more out there you think they would have started with the more popular console to fix, somewhat like the developers did for the PS2 Vs the Gamecube being PS2 was so much more popular and attracted more homebrew support (I'm not flaming I own all these systems, It would just make more sence if they started with the Wii but oh well.)

does the internet only need to be on the first time you use marios, whilst it trys to update or is it everytime you put the disc in?
Is the game worth it, i have the game but as yet not tried to use it?

I notticed on the this region compatibility list at the below link states under PAL to NTSC (Super Paper Mario)

Quote:
Risk of "bricking" if Wii is not fully up to date and online (with firmware v2.2E) (Confirmed)
So maybe you do need an internet connection.

http://wiki.gbatemp.net/index.php/Wii_Re...patibility_List

If your that worried about your Wii being bricked then use the correct region of game disc for your Wii. I am plaining on sticking with that advice myself.
