I've been through dozens of posts regarding TaiyoYuden fakes on this and other forums. Can one of you knowledgeable regulars point me to a place that can provide the definitive procedure to determine an authentic TY CD or DVD? I've seen some posts discussing the etched sequences on the inner hub of the CD or DVD, but I don't know if the TY codes are the same for all their media or if each media type has its own unique coding. If there is a list of hub stamping sequences, I'd love to see it - I'll get out my magnifying glass and try to make a determination.

After having read many posts, I got the impression that some of these fakes are internally coded (is this the ATIP - Pre-Groove?) as a TY product even if it's not. If this is so, then software identifiers are useless for this purpose.

For example, Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.5 specified a DVD-R manufacturer as unknown but the MID as TYG02, which I thought was a Taiyo-Yuden identifier. I used the same program to identify a CD-R; it shows Taiyo Yuden as the manufacturer while the MID shows 97m24s01f , whatever *that* is. If it's minutes and seconds, what the heck is f? The only time period I'm aware of with an f in it is fn, which is a fortnight. ;o)

Incidentally, I have some Ultra DVD-R's and CD-R's on order from Disc Makers which I would like to check before I begin using them.

Thanks
EdP

Here's an extract from kivory's post, who's also a master in TY media. You can use that to identify genuine taiyo yuden medias, that's the sure way!

Quote:
Taiyo Yuden rated speed & format/ media ID coding / inner hub reading

4x DVD-R = TYG01 / GD00xxxx
8x DVD-R = TYG02 / GG00xxxx
16x DVD-R = TYG03 / GH00xxxx

4x DVD+R = YUDEN000T01 / i don't know cuz i don't have any :P
8x DVD+R = YUDEN000T02 / TG00xxxx
16x DVD+R = YUDEN000T03 / TH00xxxx

MSF-Code (Minutes:Seconds:Fraction; fraction = 1/75 of a second).

Thanks for the list , TY4ever. That cleared up any confusion about identifying TY DVDs.

To find out about CDs, I did another Google search and found evilboy's TY FAQ on CDFreaks that offered this about TY CDs:
"Taiyo Yuden CD media has a frosted hub and two codes, a long one printed right into the hub and a short one in the dye area (usually 80 PGxxxx or 74 PGxxxx)."

I'm happy to know that both the DVDs and CDs I purchased from Newegg, in unidentifiable cakeboxes yet, are TY media.

Indochine ... thanks for explaining that abbreviation in "msf".

You're welcome EdPell. And in return you've shown me how to identify genuine TY CDs as i'm about to buy some in the near future.Normally NewEgg does carry genuine TY medias, you have Supermediastore, meritline, rima too which sell genuine ones(they are reliable TY media sellers),but you should avoid ebay at all cost,so many people got screwed by purchasing their believed TY medias which turned out to be FAKE.Crappy medias can fake their media id code which can show you that they are TY medias because they know that TY are simply the best, that's why they copied such code. But one thing they have yet to fake is the inner hub code as this carries a much more difficult process before they can fake it.Hope they'll never be able to fake that too in the future, else we'll be in serious trouble,us end-users.
