my dvd writer has suddenly stopped reading any of my data discs. however, it will read commercial dvd's. the home written discs fail to initialise for some reason. If they do initialise, they are showing up as a CD in windows explorer. All discs read perfectly up to a week ago. Has anyone any ideas or has my writer developed a fault?
my writer is a Lite-on DVDRW SOHW-1673s
OS Windows XP Home
Writing Software - Nero 6.6

Any help would be appreciated

Is the firmware up to date in the LiteOn? The latest is JSOD.

You can check which version you have in Nero. In SmartSmart go to ToolKit>InfoTool. In the drive tab there's a field that will tell you which firmware version you have.

Do you have another drive you can see if still reads them?

What media are this discs on? Like Sony 16x +R etc.

Hi there,
I have the currrent update for my lite-on drive.
All discs read on another dvd drive without any problems.
The media in question is varied.
Fuji 8x
Imation 8x
tesco 8x (I know - they are rubbish)
sony 8x
all retail dvds are reading. I have scanned for virus'(none present), spyware (all removed).
Still not initialising any of my discs.
I do know that windows updated prior to it stopping working but I have no idea which update it was, but I dont think it will be that.

when you are adding your data to your DVD are you finalizing your disk or closing the session. I found out that if you don't finalize or close the sesion out it will not be recognized by your drive till you close out the session and finalize. Just a thought.

also Windows can be funny by recognizing a recordable DVD as a CD... go figure.

Might want to try this too - can't hurt.
Uninstall the drive in device manager - reboot and let Windows do it thing and reinstall.
Right click on my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager.
Right click on the LiteOn and pick uninstall under CD/DVD Drives.
