if i purchase an R4 from japan and use it on my canadian bought DS lite, will it work? im wondering on the Japanese compatibility.

Yes, the DS and R4 are both region free. The DS can play games from anywhere, the R4 can load roms from anywhere, and any R4 will work in any DS. Only donwside is the R4 menu may not be english, however it is such an easy device to use that should not worry you.
