so i got a wii when it first came out. modded it a couple months ago with a cyclowiz chip. it was working pretty well after i updated the firmware. although it was finicky with different types of media. it read memorex really well but it didnt like tdks or verbatims. i opened it up and cleaned the lens with rubbing alcohol. after that it worked like a charm.
ever since i got it, the system itself was always hot, i found myself unplugging it after i played with it because it would get even hotter when it was on standby.
do your wii systems seem unusually hot to you?
after playing backups for a few hours and turning it off. i came back and it stopped playing backups, but played originals fine.
i opened back up and looked at the chip to see if the connections were loose, they were fine and the light on the chip was solid when i turned it on. put it back together and it started to work again. sweet, i didnt know what i did but it works!
after a couple days it stopped playing backups again. went to my parents place for a couple days and came back and now its playing backups again.
no idea why this happening. does anyone else have this problem with their wii? hoping that someone could shed a little light on my frustrating problem. please help =(

I've got a wiikey in mine. Yes, it's not your imagination, the wii plays hot. Even without a chip players have reported overheating issues. According to wikipedia, some systems have had the video cars affected by the heat.
No need to unplug it by the way. The power indicator LED is a tricolor. Green is on (duh), pressing the power on the wiimote puts the system into standby (yello light). BUT, if you press and hold the power button, it will turn red and it's a full power down.
Can't really help you on the backup problem. Try changing your media that you use, I've been using fuijifilm DVD-Rs and they work great.
For me the Wiimote only puts it in stand by (yellow led) even if I hold the power button down on the Wiimote it still only goes to stand by (yellow led)
So if I want to turn off the Wii (red led) I have to hold the power button down on the unit itself to power it to the off state (red led)

That's right :-) wiimote power button is software based therefore it can't put it into a full power down state. Can the wii turn on with the wiimote from a fully powerd down state?

whats wrong with it now is that my wii from time to time plays backups for a while and sometimes doesnt. im thinking that it might have something to do with the heat that the system gives off.

if the wii is having difficulty reading the discs(although the game still works) it can increase the temperature as it will be working harder to read the data ie spinning more times to read the code rather than once - this can happen with any disc based systems
the psx 1 was a classic for this although altering the lens with a screwdriver did alleviate this a little
it might just be worth a try even if it proves fruitless
there is a setting in the options of the wii but it does alter the colour of the led light - not sure what difference it is but it changes something
I will probably pick 1 of those up and I can't wait till Nintendo releases their rechargeable Wii remote battery packs that can be recharged through the USB port as well.
I found this listing for them on Overstock.com and can't wait till some more stores get these in stock...
