I hope you mean a DVD Burner and not a DVD reader. Burners are cheap now and lite ons are still good and plextors are the best now but expensive.

For the price I would be sure to get a player/burner vs a player only. Most units come bundled with the software you need for burning if you get the burner. They might come with dvd playback software, too.
For example, Windows Media Player will not play dvd's without a plug in helper. Your burner software should have one of these included (hopefullY). Choose with care; READ the box to see what is included. Go to the Microsoft web site to check out plug ins for WMP.
There might even be some software with your video card for movie playback. Mine (an nVidia card) came with "NVDVD".

Don't waste your money on a reader, get the DVD burner. The software you don't get can be gleaned here at AD and some of it is free so you can back up your DVDs.

You'll need an IDE cable most computers have 2-4 IDE slots
used for CD drives and older hard drives. (It's normally gray and flat.
Your computer might have the spare cable inside, if not they are really cheap.
I don't recommend external, I have one and they don't seem to reliable, so if you have the space on your tower and the extra IDE slots that use internal.
I also recommend installing your game, then using a no DVD crack. which can be found at gamecopyworld

@chubbyInc
I agree on the installing the DVD Burner Internally. I have 2. I also have an external burner and it works as well as the internals. In fact it will triple burn a dvd with the other two and they all stop basically one after the other in closing the discs. What kind of problem are you having with your external?

Sounds like more of a software conflict than a hardware external dvd writer problem.
