I'm building a new gaming PC and I was wondering if I should go with a physics accelerator now or wait? Is there an advantage to wait until they've been out for a little longer and they've been tweaked a little more?

Please let me know what you think.

Here are the rest of the components I'm going with.

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775

honestly, with a CPU like that (which can be greatly overclocked might I add) I think that a PPU is a bit of a waste of time. From what I've heard all it does it takes load off the CPU, but why would you need to do that when you have a CPU with dual core and 2x4MB cache.

the ppu.

it is a great idea that is doomed to fail, mostly due to timing. if it had come out with the first few dx9 cards it might of had enough time to flourish given so support from the games makers. as it is now with super poweriful gpus and quad core cpus its just too late in the game.

i have seen some stills of what it can add to games that support it and it does add some real nice eye candy to the on screen particle effects (explosions/debris) but there isn't any games that need it and to be honest i think it is less than a dozen that even support it at all.

just my opinion.

i would take the cash from the ppu and spend it on a 640mb 88gts as i belive the extra ram will be needed on the dx10 games in the future.

edit

looking at the rest of your list i would look for some 16mb cache hard disks as they perform better than the 8mb versions.

Don't waste money of a physics card. The list of games that support physics card is very short.

Don't bother, it really isn't worth it.
