i have an sd card...can i use an sd gecko to save my ROM gamesave files or do i need a gamecube memory card?

can someone please help me with how to save game progress in a rom to my sd gecko. cant seem to figure it out. when i go to save data setting under nintendo gamecube it says it cannot be used. thanks.

forgot to mention that i have a wiikey modded wii and a multiboot rom disc. i also have a 2 gb sd card and sd gecko. how do i save my games? thanks!!
