How to add empty lines in srt subtitles and convert them to dvd format

I have added greek subtitles in an English documentary with Subtitle Workshop 2.5 (it is an AVI movie). I have saved the subtitles in Subrip format (.srt). In some multiline subtitles in the documentary, I want to insert empty lines between the subtitle lines, in order to make them appear more distant apart during the movie playback. This works with by pressing [Enter], but if I save the subtitle file, close it and re-open it, the empty lines have disappeared (only the new line feature is supported). Also I would like to add some Italics formatting or a different character color to some parts of the subtitles in the documentary (e.g., when showing the name of the speaker and below, after one or two empty lines, his words with different color or character format).
My final aim is to convert the documentary to dvd video format and add the subtitles - keeping the empty lines and the formatting of the subtitle parts- so everybody with a typical dvd player can watch the documentary with the greek subtitles and the above formating in place. (I have read in the forum that avi2dvd can do this kind of job but will it keep the formatting and the empty lines across the conversion?)

I appreciate any tips...
