I got the LG GDR-8164B DVD drive and have it set up in an external IDE to firewire enclosure.
Windows XP recognizes the drive, but I can not get it to read Wii discs. It's the same as if I didn't have an LG drive at all.
I need to use the LG drive with a laptop, so does anyone know if there are any specific USB or firewire enclosures that will work?
Thanks!

What are you doing to see if it can detect the Wii Game? Your drive won't give you a message saying it detected a Game! You have to use RawDump, and just choose the drive, and click start dump, and it should detect the Game! Try that!

I have the same drive in a USB external enclosure that I got for $25 from Newegg. I made my first backup yesterday of Wario Smooth Moves with no problems at all. This morning, when I open Rawdump, it only recognizes my Samsung burner and not the LG? I have no idea why this is. Windows recognizes the drive and I can play DVDs in it. Windows did do an update overnight. Any ideas??

Dav,
Ah, ok. It seems to be recognizing that there is a Wii game in the drive, but when I attempt to do a dump, it say "Error! You may have a faulty drive!" and closes RawDump.
Also, RawDump shows two of the same DVD drive names (the same as the one in my laptop), rather than showing a different name for the LG. When I select the second one, it appears to scan the correct drive, but then I get the error.

I've gotten this kind of error before! Make sure that the disc is clean from scratches, and marks on it! Just clean off the disc... That's what I did, and it is working now!

I am having the same exact problem. If I put in a DVD the drive reads it fine. If I throw in any Wii game, the drive just spins but doesn't see the disc. This stinks. Is it the enclosure or the drive? HELP

It seems like the problem is with the enclosure. If I plug the drive into the master location on the internal IDE cable, it sees the Wii disc (got an error when ripping, but that's another problem).
Does anyone know of either a USB or Fireware external enclosure that works? I wanted to use this on a laptop, but for now it looks like a no go.
Thanks

Dav,
Which brand/model enclosure are you using? This may help a lot of us out. :)
Thanks!

I have the GDR - 8164B, and it is working just fine! I really don't know what is wrong with yours? What is the model number of yours?

Dav,
I have the same drive, but I'm asking which external enclosure you are using. :) I need to use the drive with a laptop, so I need an enclosure that will work, since my firewire enclosure isn't working.
Thanks!

My enclosure was an Inoi media burner. Worked fine with everything but rawdump. Sometimes Rawdump would recognize it, sometimes it wouldn't. I finally installed the drive in my PC bay and have had no problems since.

I am using the SYBA SD-U2DEL-525 - got it from Newegg. It's USB2 not Firewire. It was about $23 shipped and very easy to use. It's working great using XP. No go on W2K, but I was able to rip my first Wii game on XP.
