Hi, does anyone know if and how it is possible to play DivX or AVI or dvds with my modded wii? Let's say for example I burn a DivX on a DVD-R and I want to play that with my Wii. Is this possible and how?

thx

DivX is an AVI file. It is just the codec that was used to compress and decompress the Video/Audio (AVI file). Same as XviD it to is a form of an AVI file.

So if Mplayer is capable of playing AVI files on the Wii through a Game Cube homebrew DVD launcher then the question that needs to be answered is what codec is used for the AVI file and is Mplayer compatible with that codec.

Even if it is possible why put the wear and tear on the Wii DVD drive? Go buy a DVD player for $25 to $60 and play your DVD/AVI files off that. Instead of using a $250 gaming system to do it.

yeah i too cannot wait for this wii upgrade to happen something like xbmc

Though there is one right now but i am not so fond of it... they even call it wii media center. It is a move in the right direction but it requires alot of resources

http://wiicr.org/wiki/index.php/WiiCR

it decodes all video files and reencodes back to java. And then you can stream it to your wii. But dont get to excited it uses near 100% cpu. But besides that i guess its good

I just don't see the point in using a Wii as a DVD/DiVX/Xvid player when you can buy a DVD/DivX/Xvid compatible DVD player that is cheap to do the job.

A way to stream the video to your Wii is a step in the right direction. But as of now I wouldn't bother trying to use the DVD drive to play the DVD's or Video. Just seems a little harsh on the Wii DVD drive.

Nope because as stated before I wouldn't put the ware and tear on my Wii DVD drive. If they made a Media Center that would stream the video to my Wii I would use it.
