DS rom brick question.

Hi everyone, ive been reading alot about that darkfader guy and the brick virus that he circulated. Is it still even in existance? Lets say i download a rom, is it possible that if i run the rom on my ds that it could be bricked? Also is there any way to check to see if a rom has the brick virus in it, if its possible. I am very interested in this subject thank you for your time.
