Best way to go from DVD to WMV for Xbox 360?

I'd like to backup some of my DVDs to an external drive that I can plug into my Xbox 360 and play from.

What is the best route for me to take to rip from DVD and convert to a WMV file for widescreen playback on the 360?

I am also having the same problem, although with the update xbox 360 can also play mppg4s now. So if anyone knows how to rip from a DVD to mpeg4 or wmv, that would be a lot of help.
