Hi.

Ok so I am new at Modchips and soldering. So, the first thing I did in my journey was to get Raw Dump 2.0 working. So, I downloaded Raw Dump, bought and installed the LG drive and everything seems to work. Then, I bough my WiiD modchip with "wire and solder kit" and "tri-wing screwdriver". Then, I went to Radio Shack to see what kinds of soldering kits they have and see what I need. But the first thing I saw is that they have different wattage ratings. What wattage is recommended for this kind of soldering? There was a selection of 15, 25, 30 and 40 watts. Second question is... What exactly do I need to do? In the kit I saw some kind of coiled up metal... which I believe is the solder. What do I need to do? Just melt a bit of the solder and put it in the contact points?

If you don't know what solder is then maybe you shouldn't be installing your WiiD. I would suggest sending it in and have the Modchip installed by a pro.

But if you don't want to then what you will need is a 15WAT soldering iron with the smallest tip you can find.

You would be correct. (Again I strongly recommend you have a Pro install it)

What you need to do is tin the wires and tin the spots where the wires will be connected. Tinning is adding a small amount of solder to each end of your wires and every soldering point that will make a soldering joint on the Wii drive board plus the WiiD itself.

Below is an image of where you will solder the wires...




Point D is optional. It will let you reset/turnoff the Modchip. It does not need to be soldered to have the Modchip operational. if you want to solder that wire then I have included a link below that shows the steps for it. It is a guide on installing a WiiD Modchip so it should be helpfull...

Yeah I think you're right, I may screw up bad! I should ask a pro to do it. But I think I'll better ask a friend of mine who has experience instead of sending my Wii and paying a lot more for the installation.

Thanks a lot! I'll buy the iron just in case. It may be handy.

Yeah I think if your friend has some experience then that would be a better choice. It would suck if you F**K up the Wii trying it yourself. It has happened many times on the site.

Update us when you get the WiiD installed. I have a WiiD and love it. Have not had any problems.

Not many WiiD owners on this site so it is always good to get another opinion from another WiiD owner.

Update: Modchipstore had screwed up with my order and it was yesterday, May 22nd that they shipped my WiiD. I'm going to buy today the switchable 15-30 watt soldering iron, and I've got a friend with modchip experience to help me with the job.

Question: Which is recommended? Quicksolder or Installing with wires? Here http://www.wii-ftw.com/page/wiid.install.review they recommend installing with wires. Why is that? (Well... one reason I can think of by myself is because it will be easier to remove just in case...)

I did a wire install on my WiiD.

My opinion is if you ever have to replace the WiiD(with 2nd Generation modchip) it would be easier to unsolder the WiiD chip and then just solder the new chip to the wires. This way you don't have to touch your Wii board and take the chance of screwing it up.
