Hey everyone!
I recently purchased the Nintendo Wii and I must say, I love it. I got the WiiKey dropped in it about 3 days later and got some games from the installer. However, I am having the hardest time with getting games, burning them, ROMs, all the good stuff. I went out and got some Memorex DVD-R 16x 4.7 GB DVDs to burn on, and after purchasing those, I find out I have what seems to be the crappiest DVD Burner ever, the Sony DVD RW DW-D22A which came with my computer.
I've used 7 DVDs trying to get even the WiiKey config DVD to work, and it's a no go. I've tried burning ROMs with GCISOMaker, WiiEmus and even WiiKey Config 1.2. I also tried my laptop, and that didn't work.
So, I spent a hell of a lot of time trying to get my DVD burner to actually work, upgraded my firmware to BYS3 (if that is correct?) got CDBurner XP Pro 3, yes it burns ISO to DVD, and none of the DVDs work on my Wii. I'm guessing it's the combo of crappy burner and probably crappy media, so before I do ANYTHING else, I need to figure out my next step before I end up wasting more money.
My question is simply, what DVD Burner should I get that won't kick my butt money wise, and what DVDs should/CAN I use with that burner? I find there is no straight answer to getting ROMs to work, I've tried a guide on wiiftw and it didn't help (sorry). I'm begging someone to push me far into the right direction!
Thanks in advance!!

Awesome! The LG Drive is actually for ripping Wii games off the original DVD, I'm just trying to burn them from ISO to DVD, so I need a burner. Any burner works eh? So it's the media that I'm using. I know the installer used Playo 8x and they work.
Also, I tried to find a media support list for my burner, and none are around. Should I try getting some 8x as opposed to 16x?
Thanks for the responses!

Approx 8 minutes.
I realized the installer for my WiiKey chip set the reader to 3x, and I've noticed no one has been asking about the read speed on the Wii after modification, so after you get your Wii modified, make sure you know what speed the Wii's driver is set to so you can burn your DVD-Rs at the same speed! So I figured out it was 3x and burned a Memorex DVD-R at 3x with SNES and NES mods, popped my GC Controller and Memory Card in the slots, turned it on and she booted up beautifully.

@vdojunkie you cant actually say that a cheap media is a GREAT QUALITY media. in quality when we talk about cds/dvds are its dyes which is the place where the data is being written on. better dye quality = longer life and lesser DREs.

what u said above is so wrong
u can burn at what speed u wish, the read speed of the wii is irrelevant
its set to 3x as it spins slower and is therefore quieter(allegedley)

LOL@Ghostboy you tool. The name of Fry's cheap DVD's is Great Quality or GQ for short. LMAO. But you are right they are total crap discs. The dye goes bad about 1-2 months after burning an ISO on them.
@vdojunkie, I thought the same thing about GQ disks, When I used them for my original Xbox. They worked fine for a week or two, then I tried them 2-3 months after burning them and every single one would give me DRE's sooner or later. Save yourself the hassle now and buy Verbatim or Yuden's. Remember you get what you pay for.

Then why does no other speed but 3x work for the Wii? I've tried everything from 1-16x as 16x is the highest speed for the DVD, only 3x works. Maybe I've got a picky Wii? Nothing changed except for the speed, I've used Nero and CDBurnerXP, only ImgBurn did it. Then I went back to Nero and CDBurnerXP (or whatever it's called, uninstalled now) and they both worked for 3x. So what's the deal?

Those settings are there when you insert the WiiKey install disk 1.2.
I just finished setting my WiiKey to 4x and now the first DVD I used won't work, set it back to 3x and it works again. Must not be the speed of the drive =).

by settings i meant a 16x setting. ffs do u read and ACTUALLY believe what u type
just because something in your setup whether it be ur burner , ur discs, ur wii or ur imagination, means u have to burn at that specific speed doesnt mean it is correct. in the mainstream of users here we all burn faster than 3x - some upto 16x and 90% of us ALL have the wii set to read at 6x
your responses are misleading to every other noob who comes in here. Believe me you are wrong about what you are saying. Stop posting crap that other noobs will read and take as gospel
thank you

@jyearwood
I doubt your even burning the DVD at 3x
You might have it set to 3x but most DVD media now days won't burn lower then 4x
I have some Tayio Yudens and have ImgBurn set to burn at 2x but it still burns at 4x. I actually had some other media that would only burn between 6x and 16x
So next time you actually do a burn pay attention and see what the actual speed the disc is burning at.

And by the way Thinone, do you ACTUALLY know how to spell?
All I was trying to do was help figure out the problem between media and the DRE, but of course there is always that 14 year old punk kid. Thumbs up.

shut the door behind you when you leave
oh and if you mean spelling as "ur instead of your" well its called shorthand
i wouldnt have responded so harshly at the end other than you decided you did not want to listen, when i told you it was NOT true what you had said and tried to put you right, you decided to come back with a sarcastic comment "Must not be the speed of the drive =)" making out you actually knew what you was talking about.
I guess next time you could,(being the expert on these bbs boards that you obviously are) actually learn how to use the search button and learn something for yourself other than having to be spoon fed the answers. All your questions have been faced(and answered) many many many times before
Oh and when someone does take the time to reply, maybe take on board what that person is saying to you other than repeating what you THINK is correct when you are being informed in a nice way that you are not. That is the way forward in learning on this board.
When i 1st joined i learnt that when you ask a question you then take on board what is said, not totally disregard it and spout the same old nonsense
bye then

You're correct and I should apologize, I have a pretty bad temper and it gets to me sometimes.
I did not take what you said lightly, you shouldn't take what I said lightly either, it is true that you are the one to most likely be right, being the senior member. I did however search many times on this forum and couldn't come up with an answer.
I simply remembered the settings from the WiiKey disk were set to 3x, I burned a DVD at that speed (2.7x actually) and it worked somehow. I tried a few other ways and it didn't work, that's all. I don't know why it was like that but it was, so again, I'm sorry for being an ass. Thanks for your help =).

apology accepted and returned if i also seemed harsh
my reply still stands though
"u can burn at what speed u wish, the read speed of the wii is irrelevant
its set to 3x as it spins slower and is therefore quieter(allegedley)"
people turn this speed back up to 6x as it takes longer to load games if set to 3x
like i also said - it may be something specific to your setup as to why these settings work - however this is not the norm and is very unusual if it is indeed the answer to your problems - i think a change of discs or writer or software may change your mind later down the road. I just don't want other new visitors to the board to take what you said onboard and treat it as gospel since it is really not the case.
thank you and please stay

Definately. I'm not trying to preach, all though it may have seemed that way I guess..The games actually seem to load very fast. I always have the strangest luck when it comes to anything I have my heart set on. Perhaps setting it to 6x will make it faster, I'll give that a try!
One question I do have..ImgBurn says that the Memorex DVD can only allow burn speeds of 2,4,6 and 8 times. What's up with that? The DVD says UP TO 16x..weird isn't it?
(Thanks Thinone)

what happens is that the manufacturer of the burners release updated firmware that tells the drives about the newer discs that come onto the market. maybe the firmware you updated the burner with wasnt the correct or latest one?
i had similiar problem with my pioneer but when i updated the firmware it fixed it - my 16x were recognised as 16x instead of 8x
it may be your writer IS the problem i dont know - its trial and error - do you have access to a different one to try?
or maybe try different discs

Yep, I tried on my laptop as I think I said in the first post...it didn't work, I updated my Sony to the latest driver (BYS3) and I'm sure it's the latest, so I'm all up to date, the laptop is as well.
It's weird, as you said, very unusual, and that's what always happens when I do anything. Ah well, I'm going to pick up some verbatims I think and give those a shot..
Thanks again bro =).
