Successfull Experience:
DGen, SNES, PSPUAE, Homebrew games involving the GAME150 folder.

Downloaded:
UMD Emu v08
UMD Gen
Azerus (Aquired somekind of Activision Greatest Hits torrent or whatever...Like 10 files about 20 megs each)

Problem:
How in the hell do I play a UMD/ISO PSP game from memorystick?
For that matter, how do I backup a UMD anyway?

Firmware: 3.03 OE-C.
Best out there is the 3.10 OE-A or the new one 3.40OE

Problem:
How in the hell do I play a UMD/ISO PSP game from memorystick?

ISOs are not so difficult to run, there are some folders inside the Memory stick when you use the USB Connection, then copy the files to the ISO folder, have in mind that you NEED to have a UMD inside the PSP to play memory games, then go to your Memory Stick in the Game Menu option and open it up, you will see the game there... and thats it :)

For that matter, how do I backup a UMD anyway?

There are certain programs to do it, you can check them in psp-hack.com, I was reading about one, which sounded interesting... also use UMDGen 4.00 to compress them, its a really good compressor. Lets see the Backing up soft is... sorry i am blocked here, refer to google.com for that instance... :)

But mainly, how do I set up my PSP to play ISO games?

Just copy paste them on the ISO folder inside the Memory stick, dont forget to format your MS after upgrading to 3.03Oe, then you will have the ISO folder inside :)

Hope this helps

Found it
UMD Ripping Tool - there are several available including UMD Ripper GX, UMDNetRipper, UMDTool etc.

After this you use the UMDGen 4.00 to compress it and pass it then to your PSP with the USB Connection, just like you will be passing it to a SD Card or USB Flash memory

oh, ok. thanks for your attention. yes, i formatted right away and have the ISO folder from day one.

i have UMD Gen 4 and my question there is with the 'generate BIN file'. I put all the compressed folders in the explorer window and add a itle and generate a BIN? save as ISO/CSO?

is it just subjective to opinion about which UMD ripper is best?
Everone seems to agree DarkAlex's 3.03 oe-c and higher is the best custome firmware and I am happy with it...why exactly do i need to up to 3.40? will it help with ISO problems or is it just so I can p-lay newer UMDs and such?

I spent a few hours and got some europe version od Pursuit Force. I open the folder and thewre is about 15 WinRAR archives all named pursuit force..I unarched one and the full 375 meg cso appeared...i put it into the ISO folder and i did get a game boot icon and it worked perfectly up until after the intro and create new profile screen. it tries to load a sve, dosent find one, and lets me create a profile...then, -just before i would think it starts (I push 'X')- and a small, blank, grey box appears and no other button does anything but make the blank box go away but it wont load the game. the game intor looks really cool but making a small grey box appear is all i can do as far as interacting with it.

say, i have a program called 'Map This! and its a pretty cool map program for PSP but it only includes New York...any idea how I get more maps for it?

thanks again for your help...i can see though it might be aq challenge to find a reliable site to find torrents or whatever...as if there are a lot of ripped version and whatnot.

i keep running out of time to do stuff sith the computer...so much I should be doing that it takes so long just to dl a iso, the unarching, saving to memstick, and it not working all before i even spend a bunch of time playing the game. there just are not enuf hours to trial and error this, especially with torrents that take 5 hours to dl to only be a non working file.
i'm missing files in my head in terms of knowing this or that about computers and file structures and editors and such. it takes hours to research this stuff when you dont know someone who knows and saves you a pile of time.
i guess we're in this together.
i found out that im supposed to create my own maps with Mapthis!...there again, more time needed to figure that out.

anyway, i'll try another iso tonight. Pursuit Force looked cool though. i got it to come up in the game xmb and load the intor...the problem with loading a savedgame or creating a new one is why it wont play. close but no cigar.
(i got the torrent from gamesfive.net which is mostly in another launguage, i barely able figured out what to click on...)

theres a couple presents for UMD in the recovery menu but for some reason i think it has nothing to do with why Pursuit Force wont work.

guess ill type wit ya lata.

ok. its all good now. i got the jist of it with this ISO business.
I'll eventually up to 3.10 or 3.4 when i get the chance.
a good way to get advice on that stuff it to type with Wulfgar (or someone who knows something) on PSPhacks.com IRC real-time chat...its good for quick questions...just dont type about pirate ISO or ROMS there...u get banned.

the deal with ISO is this, as i understand it:

downloading a packed ISO or CSO is all ready for the ISO folder...it should work fine on its own or its internally fucked somehow (two other torrents i downloaded were that and thats why i was fustrated).

downloading an archive with a PSP_GAME folder and a UMD.BIN file goes into the UMD Gen 4 program and is 'saved' as a CSO. Viola! I downed an archive for Battlezone and used the UMD Gen and it made me the cso file i put in the ISO folder and it worked perfectly...except, um...the game kinda sucks. but thats not the point :P

so now i understand this much about ISOs so I'm going to rename this thread.

thanks again for your reply...i hate when it feels like im typing to myself.

ISO (pain in the ass-o) is now Internation Standards Organization.

ps:
yea, if i hade more TIME, maybe i would Cut & Paste a good article forthis thread about the fact 'ISO' can be used to define all kinds of stuff. before this, I was more familiar with ISO as in
'ISO 9001' (for a standard on how parts are made in factories).
but...I DO have the deleted scenes from Training Day on pause for like an hour now...

;)

You see, its pretty neat, I feel the same, as I work for a PC Company... XX Company I have learn to look the things up, eventhough I know I wont find them to keep looking for an answer until i get it, I found several articles I am still looking how to create your PSX games into the PSP I am interested in finishing certain games, anyways I am glad I helped on this matter :), I found how to compress them ISOs into CSOs and how to DUMP the UMDs into your PC... it took me 2 days without help thelast thing I need to learn is how to update firmware. Anyways good luck!

yeah, its a cool little community. you just didnt get this kinda thing with the Sega Game Gear. although all this does remind me of the Amiga days. The Firmware issue on my end was done with a easy windows-installer and so was the downgrade for that matter, so i got past a lot of maticulas issues easily.
i thought there was either just a windows installer for 3.4 or some way of updating more easy that the original installation of Dark ALex's software.

Speaking of Dark Alex, that dude must be like a rockstar in the PSP community. everyone raves about his work and it seems to be the most trusted.

But to sum up the ISO issue, it seems to be a matter of just getting good downlaods, the Firmware does the rest.

Yup, I can tell you, go get UMDGen 4.00 it creates ISO and CSO, the CSO is a more compressed file of the ISO, you can store more games instead of the ISO files... also that program can help you identify good ISOs... I have seen that its a pretty net tool, I already finished my learning on PSX to PSP and it worked pretty fine, no comments and no problems.

i have UMDGen 4. i just had downloaded a 300 meg rar whuch unpaked into a 700 meg rar which unpaked to the format that has worked best so far: a PSP_Game folder and a UMD_DATA.BIN file. I drag the folder and BIN file to the UMD gen. This has worked fine a few times but the very last time i tried, it saved it all as a cso about 75 megs. im on limited memory her so I delete each old archive as i go...this was a mistake because maybe sometimes it takes two attempts at saving the iso/cso because a 700 meg folder should have no business being compressed to 75 megs, needless to say it didnt work. i could repeat the process because, like i said, i delete each previos arch.

so far ive had the best luck with a torrent that looks like:
Gamename [EUR][UMDfull][PSP] etc...
after i spend a day downloading, hopefully it unpaks to the PSP_Game folder and UMD.BIN format to use with UMDGen 4.

i need more leads on good isos in this state. i know of one crazy-ass site but i know theres got to be more out there.
PM (personal Message) me.

thanks

Will check cause I am getting mine from a store owner that lets me lend and buy the games that I prefer... so I keep the ones I like, anyways the 75MB is strange, but can you belive I have compress GTA Liberty City from a 1.2 GB file to a 3MB file? INcredible right dont know why yet... but instead of deleting them, you should test them in your PSP if they work, then you are fine to go.

the issue of compression is more vast than i can grasp at the moment. i understand WinRAR to a certain extent. the file is downloaded around half its actual rar size. the first rar file has compacted another. then after decompressing the second archive, i hopefully get the only folder/bin format i understand what to do with (UMDGen). some archives open as 15 more archives and THAT format i dont get yet. it seems when i DO have the format i understand, i make it into a cso...which is yet another! way of compression. recently, i did this and ended up with the 75 mb file from a 700 because, simply, i think i ran out of room on the hard drive and UMDGen just TRIED to do it and stopped when it ran out of room. I tried again, got a step closer with now a 400 mb cso that makes the icon appear in XMB...TRIES to load, but I get error 80020147 (im not exactly sure of the numbers now...definately starting with 800201...something...)

i think the file maybe currupt or im still having mem issues. My lame computer only has a 12 gig harddrive.

my PSP has a 2 gig card that could easily get filled in no time.

im unclear on the exact rules of this forum so discussing certain details is tricky. i'll check back later
